Hradec Králové is a city in Bohemia, located on the banks of the Elbe. The city is already known from the 11th century, and it was continuously expanded and reconstructed after major fires several times in the 13th-15th centuries. The hardest setback, however, was the Thirty Years’ War, which left the city destroyed, but which made possible the reconstruction in Baroque style from the 17th century. Since then, the city has grown through industrialization and with interesting architectural features.
The old town of Hradec Králové is well preserved and a pleasant place to stroll the streets. The square Velké náměstí is the center of the city, and several of Hradec Králové’s best-known sights are located here. To the west is the twin-towered Gothic cathedral, built from 1307, the city’s old town hall, and the Bílá věž tower, which is 72 meters high. The tower dates from the 16th century, and there is a fine view of the city from the tower’s observation deck.
In the middle of Velké náměstí you can see the city’s beautiful plague column in fine baroque from 1714-1717, and to the east you can walk towards Malé náměstí square and enjoy the view to baroque churches and fine arcades in the houses of the streets. There are also several museums in Hradec Králové. Among them are the East Bohemian Museum, housed in a beautiful temple-like building from 1909-1912, and the city’s modern art museum, Galerie moderneho umění, which exhibits a wide range of Czech artists. The museum is in a remarkable Art Nouveau building.
Around the old town of Hradec Králové you can sense the contours of old fortifications in the street network. This dates from the time of Emperor Joseph II, when the city was declared a fortress city in 1778, and this led to the development of mighty facilities around Königgrätz, as the city was then called. The old defensive positions are now decommissioned, but on the outskirts of the city you can instead explore and walk in parks such as Žižkovy sady and Šimkovy sady.
Pardubice is a town located at the point where the river Chrudimka flows into the Elbe. It was first mentioned as a town in 1340 and was continuously expanded through the years since then. This was the development, not least, after the nobleman Vilém II. z Pernštejna took over Pardubice in 1491. The Pernštejn family built the entire city center, and they expanded the city castle into an elegant residence. Over the following centuries, the city preserved its style and buildings.
The old town of Pardubice is therefore full of cozy streets and squares, and Perštýnské náměstí is the most beautiful square to start a stroll. Here, houses from the Late Gothic and the Renaissance stand side by side and form a fine urban space, where you can see Pardubice’s fine town hall on the north side. In front of the town hall, you can notice the Plague Column from 1698, which was erected in gratitude for the end of the plague, that were passing the city in 1680.
Prague is one of Central Europe’s most enchanting and interesting cities. The river Vltava meanders through the city passing several hills and boroughs, each containing unique architectural gems, elegant squares, green oases and everything else that belongs to a big city.
A meeting with Prague is a meeting with one of Europe’s old and large cultural cities. Throughout the streets of the old town you will find nice architecture, large institutional buildings, churches and historical places where emperors and kings have left their mark over the years. The Old City and the New City are located on the eastern side of the river, and together with the Lessor Town and Prague Castle on the western shore, they make the most interesting parts of Prague.
