České Budějovice is a beautiful town located in southern Bohemia at the point where the river Malše flows into the larger Vltava. The city was founded by the Bohemian King Ottokar II in 1265, and the royal city was supposed to strengthen Ottokar’s position in the region. Over the centuries, the city has been influenced by both German and Czech culture, and as part of the Habsburg Empire as well.
The old town of České Budějovice is located like an island at the confluence of the rivers, and the Náměstí Přemysla Otakara II is the central square of the city. All sides of the large square are full of beautiful houses, and in the middle of the square you can see the Samson fountain from the 1720s, which is one of the city’s landmarks. To the southwest you can see the baroque town hall of České Budějovice, which was built in the years 1727-1730.
The cathedral is another major attraction in České Budějovice. The cathedral is the city’s main church, and next to it you can see the tower Černá věž, which was constructed 1549-1577 as a bell tower, watchtower and as a symbol of the city’s prosperity. In the center you can also see the fortress towers Železná panna and Rabštejnská věž from the 13th-14th centuries and the Solnice salt warehouse from 1531.
České Budějovice is also famous for its beer production. It was King Ottokar II who already at the foundation of the city gave it brewing rights, and at one point the production had the status of an imperial brewery. The success continued, and today Budweiser Budvar is known as beer from České Budějovice. You can of course visit the traditional brewery during a tour of the city.
Telč is a relatively small town famous for having a cozy and quite unique old center with one of the most beautiful market squares in the Czech Republic. The town was probably founded in 1099, and it is known in records dating from 1335. From the middle of the 16th century, Telč’s medieval castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and Gothic houses were rebuilt in the same style.
Despite the city’s modest size, there are great sights in Telč, which since 1992 has been included in UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage. The center of the town is the elongated market square, Náměstí Zachariáše z Hradce, named after Zacharias of Hradec, who was the master behind the 16th century Renaissance town.
Linz is a city in northern Austria, beautifully situated on the banks of the Danube. It is the country’s third largest city, and it dates to the foundation by the Romans. Linz quickly became an active trade city, and it temporarily became the kingdom’s most important city when Emperor Friedrich III resided his last years here. Over the centuries, Linz grew, for which big plans were launched with Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. Hitler regarded Linz as his hometown, and it was supposed to be a leading city for art and culture, which was however not realized.
In Linz, the square Hauptplatz forms the center of the city. It is a square with many elegant houses, and here you can see the city’s old town hall, and in front of the town hall stands the Trinity Column, which was erected 1717-1723 as a plague column in gratitude for overcoming an epidemic. From the Hauptplatz, you can take a walk along the street Hofgasse, which leads to a lovely area with narrow streets and small squares. It is also in this area that you can get to Linz’s old residence castle.
