Olomouc is a city on the Morava River in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. The city is first known in documents dated in year 1017, and Olomouc became a bishop’s seat in 1063. The city grew rapidly the following centuries, becoming one of Moravia’s most important cities. However, its rivalry with Brno ended when Sweden captured Olomouc during the Thirty Years’ War. Since then, the city was fortified, and it is once again one of the country’s largest cities.
The central square in the city is called Horní náměstí, and here you can see the Olomouc Town Hall with the famous astronomical clock, which was originally installed in the 15th century. The clock today is a reconstruction from 1955 with socialist motifs. In the square you can also see the Trinity Column, which is included in UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage. The column is a fine example of Moravian Baroque from the 18th century. The column is 35 meters high and erected 1716-1754.
Olomouc’s old town is cozy, and you can e.g. take a walk on Dolní náměstí and náměstí Republiky squares. There are also several old buildings which belong to Olomouc’s many sights and attractions. One of the largest and best known is the cathedral Katedrála sv. Václava, which is a Gothic cathedral founded in 1107. The cathedral was later rebuilt several times, and the tall central tower was constructed 1883-1892.
Next to the cathedral you can walk to the Olomouc Castle, historically one of the most important castles in the Czech territory. There are churches worth seeing as well, such as Kostel svatého Mořice and Kostel svatého Michala. Northeast of the center you can explore the impressive Hradisko Monastery, which stands beautifully in high baroque architecture. There are also several interesting museums in Olomouc, and if you want to tour the region, you can visit the beautiful baroque complex Svatý Kopeček, located a few kilometers from Olomouc.
Ostrava is a city on the river Oder. It is the third largest city in the Czech Republic and is located at the point where the smaller Ostravice River flows into the Oder River. Ostrava was founded in 1267, and it developed easily with the city’s strategically good location on the border between Moravia and Silesia. Later, Ostrava became the center of an extensive coal mining and metal industry, which lasted until the end of the 20th century.
Today, Ostrava is a beautiful and cozy city with an old quarter that is suitable for good walks and sights within close distance to each other. The square Masarykovo náměstí is the center of the city, and on the square, you can see a plague column erected in 1702 and the city’s old town hall, now set up as the Ostrava Museum. At the museum, you can learn more about Ostrava’s history through pictures, documents, archaeological finds, and more.
Zlín is a city in the eastern part of Czech Republic, known in documents from 1322. The town was given rights and thus formally became a city in 1397. Over the following centuries, Zlín grew and gradually became an important regional center of trade and economy. In the 19th century, industrialization boosted new growth in the city, and it was especially the shoe factory, Tomáš Baťa and Jan Antonín Baťa founded in 1894, which defined the city from that year forward.
Baťa quickly became the leading shoe factory in Czechoslovakia, and Baťa’s factories were also developed into industrial areas other than shoe production. In the years 1923-1938, the Baťa factories built almost a completely new town, which can still be seen. Baťa’s city within the city spanned factories, office buildings, residences, shops and much more, all built in homogenous functionalism, making Zlín architecturally unique in the world.
Brno is the capital of Moravia and the second largest city in the Czech Republic. It is a city that has grown at the confluence of the rivers Svitava and Svratka, although these rivers are not visible in the atmospheric center, where you as a tourist can enjoy many lovely walks.
Brno’s highlights are literally St. Peter and Paul Cathedral and Špilberk Castle, both perched on top of some of the hills that draw the city’s landscape and skyline. The two sights are also among the most visited places in Brno, but there is also much else to see.
