Trnava is a town located on the river Trnávka in western Slovakia. The town developed as a market town because the site was located on two major crossing trade routes, and in 1238 Trnava obtained city status as the first town in present-day Slovakia. In 1541 the city became the seat of an archbishop, which naturally increased its importance, and Trnava University opened in 1635. However, both the archbishop and the university moved to Budapest and Esztergom at the beginning of the 19th century, and this slowed down the development in Trnava, which later experienced a great boom of industrialization.
Today you can enjoy a cozy and well-preserved old town in Trnava. The district is defined by the old city walls, which for a large part still stand along the city streets. Behind the walls you will find the square Trojičné námestie as the center of Trnava. Here you can see the tower Mestská veža, which was built as a fire tower and as a lookout tower as part of the defense against possible attacks from the Muslim Ottomans. On the square stands the Trinity Column as well, erected in baroque style in 1695.
Trnava is known for the city’s many churches. One of the most see-worthy ones is St Nicholas Cathedral, which was constructed 1380-1421, and which was the archbishop’s seat for several centuries. In addition, you can visit the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, which was the first major Baroque building to be built in Slovakia. The church was built from 1629, and it is an impressive work outside and inside, where you can see a sumptuous decoration and an elegant main altar from 1640.
You can also choose to simply take a stroll in the streets of Trnava, where there are many fine town houses, several churches, monasteries and various monuments. There are two synagogues as well, both of which were built in the late 19th century. It is also recommended to take a walk around the old city walls. The trip is about three km long, and in its time, there was a moat and four city gates in the defensive complex. To the west you can see the large Bernolák gate and a large park where the moat used to be.
Nitra is a city in western Slovakia, located on the river Nitra and at the foot of the mountain Zobor. The city was already present from the 8th century, and it is considered Slovakia’s oldest city. Over time, the city and the area have been the scene of many acts of war and destruction. Nitra also became home to a castle and a bishop’s seat that left a mark on history. Most recently, Nitra burned down in 1708, and therefore the city was rebuilt in the dominating Baroque architecture of the century.
Nitra’s modern center is located in the so-called lower town around the round square Svätoplukovo námestie, from which the narrow street Štefánikova trieda starts. On Svätoplukovo námestie, you can see Nitra’s old town hall, mestský dom, which was built in 1882 and is now a museum. Opposite the old town hall is the city’s modern theater building, which replaced the former theater from the 1880s after destruction during the Second World War.
Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and one of Central Europe’s magnificent and at the same time very interesting cultural cities, and you can clearly sense a certain resemblance to other capitals and metropolitan cities of the historic Habsburg Empire, of which Bratislava was a central part for many years.
Beautiful squares and an old town with many atmospheric streets invite you to take wonderful walks between countless buildings from, for example, the Baroque era, and at the same time it is a good idea to enjoy the elegant and quite diverse architecture that characterizes the cityscape.
