Reno is one of the largest cities in the US state of Nevada. Its history began in the 1850s, when settlers came along the Truckee River in the relatively fertile area between Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake. Concurrent gold and silver discoveries to the west brought more settlers to the region, and in 1859 Charles W. Fuller built a toll bridge over the Truckee River, which provided access to the road west to California. Some people settled around the bridge, which was purchased by Myron C. Lake, who made an agreement with the Central Pacific Railroad to build the track between California and Utah through Lake Crossing, which formally became a town in 1868 and later changed its name to Reno.
Today, Reno is not least known for its casinos and other entertainment. It was an industry that boomed after Nevada’s liberalization of gambling and easing of divorce rules in the late 1920s. You can clearly see this in the downtown cityscape today, where the Reno Arch spans Virginia Street at Commercial Row. You can see the slogan of Reno on the arch, The Biggest Little City in the World. The first Reno Arch was erected in 1926 to celebrate the opening of main roads through the city, and it was decided to preserve the arch, which got its slogan after a competition in 1929. The first arch was replaced in 1963, and since 1995 it stands on Lake Street just south of the Truckee River.
In downtown Reno, you can take a nice walk along the Truckee River, where Wingfield Park is on an island in the river like a green oasis. Further east along the Truckee River Walk you come to the City Plaza and Virginia Street, the main street where some of the city’s casinos are. On the City Plaza you can see Reno’s City Hall, and on the opposite side of the river stands Frederic DeLongchamp’s beautiful Art Deco Post Office from 1930, which today serves a different purpose than originally. Behind the old post office you can see the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts and the Washoe County Courthouse, which, along with the Reno National Bank building north of City Plaza, stands as one of Reno’s oldest buildings.
The former Riverside Hotel west of the old post office building is along the south bank of the Truckee River. The Riverside Hotel is a beautiful redstone building that Frederic DeLongchamps designed as a hotel and it also served as a casino for several years before closing in 1986. The Riverside Hotel was built as Nevada’s tallest building at the time, and was constructed on that exact spot, where Reno was founded in 1859. From the area around City Plaza, you can continue along the Truckee River to the east, where you can see several hundred old cars at the National Automobile Museum, which opened in 1989. Here are cars that have been owned by John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and many more.

The pioneers came from the eastern United States, where they were victims of persecution because of their Mormon faith, and they settled in Mexico, to which Utah belonged in 1847.
Four days after the founding of the city, Brigham Young designated the site where the Mormon temple would be built. After this, Salt Lake City grew rapidly due to the arrival of more Mormons and gold miners as well, who helped make the city one of the largest in the West. In 1869, the transcontinental railroad came to the area north of Salt Lake City, and the following year a siding opened to the city.
