City Introduction

Manchester is one of the largest cities in the US state of New Hampshire. Its history began in 1722 when John Goffe settled at the falls of the Merrimack River and established a dam and sawmill in what came to be known as Old Harry’s Town. In 1727 the place was called Tyngstown, and 24 years later the town changed its name again; this time to Derryfield.

In 1807, Samuel Blodget built sluices and a canal past the town’s waterfall, and this provided good conditions for industrial development. Therefore, Blodget saw an American version of the English industrial city Manchester as a vision of the future, and in 1810 Manchester got its current name. In the city, the company Amoskeag Manufacturing Company developed a large textile industry, and in 1838 Amoskeag designed Manchester as a so-called company town.

With the industry, more residents moved to Manchester, which in the decades around the year 1900 grew and established several tram lines. The depression of the 1930s hit Manchester hard, and the city was marked by industrial decline after World War II too, but later Manchester experienced growth again.

Today, Manchester is home to several attractions, and it has a good location along the Merrimack River. The main road of Elm Street runs along the river, and you can start a downtown walk at City Hall. It is Manchester’s distinctive town hall building, built in 1844-1845 to designs by Boston architect Edward Shaw. At the town hall, you can also see the City Hall Plaza, which, at 84 meters in height, opened in 1992 as the city’s tallest building.

If you want to go for a stroll, a walk along Elm Street is the right place with the street’s shops and restaurants. From here you can go to the cozy Victory Park, which in the city’s early days was laid out for cultivation and grazing, but after being sold to the city for one dollar in 1848, a park was created. In the middle of the complex, you can see a monument with a statue of the goddess of victory, Victoria. It was erected in 1929 to commemorate Manchester’s soldiers in the First World War.

You can also visit some interesting museums in Manchester, such as the Currier Museum of Art, which is an art museum with a nice collection. Among other things, there are works by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse in the exhibition. The museum was founded in 1929, and the Zimmerman House and the Toufic H. Kalil House are parts of the museum too. They are two houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The houses were built in 1951 and 1955 respectively and are open as museum houses.

Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Boston

Boston is a city in the state of Massachusetts and thereby in so-called New England, and it is not simply because it is located in the northeastern corner of the United States close to Europe. You feel British culture here more than anywhere else in the United States, but of course the many benefits of American culture are also part of daily life and the cityscape here.

Boston’s many quaint streets and neighborhoods also hold much of the American independence history in the years of struggle with England. It was in the northeastern United States that the cradle of the present United States was, and this is where the rebellion against the colonial power of England took place.

Concord, New Hampshire, USA

Concord

Concord is the capital of the state of New Hampshire. Its history began in 1725 when the Penacook Plantation was established and on the site the settlement grew into what in 1734 became the town of Rumford. In 1765, Rumford changed its name to Concord at the behest of Governor Benning Wentworth. The name signified harmony and was chosen to bring an end to a dispute between the towns of Rumford and Bow.

Today, Concord is one of America’s smaller state capitals, but despite its size, there is much to see in the city. The most famous building is the government building New Hampshire State House, which was designed by the architect Stuart Park and built in the years 1815-1818. The building was expanded in 1910, but the state legislature still meets in the original setting.
