City Introduction

London is one of the largest cities in the Canadian province of Ontario. The city’s history began in 1793, when Lieutenant John Graves Simcoe selected the site as a place for a future capital for Upper Canada. Simcoe named the site London after the English capital, and the river through the area he named the Thames, again as in London, England.

However, settlement did not take off until 1826, and London was not chosen as the capital. The town grew, but was hit by a big fire in 1845, which destroyed many of the town’s then wooden houses. London had a population of 3,500 at this time, and the number had tripled by 1855, when London was large enough to formally become a city.

Two years earlier the railway had come to town, and throughout the rest of the 19th century many industries were established here. Later, London became, among other things, both home to a garrison and a university town, which grew significantly throughout the 20th century to a population that today exceeds 400,000.

You can go for some nice walks in the center of London, located in the area around Dundas Street. Here you can easily find shops, shopping centers and restaurants among an architectural mix from the city’s history. In the streets you can also notice several buildings such as the Grand Theater and St. Paul’s Cathedral, which is the episcopal seat of the Anglican Church in Canada. St. Paul’s Cathedral was built 1844-1846 and is the oldest church in London.

If you want to take a closer look at art and history, Museum London is a good place. At the museum you can experience highlights of London’s history and the people and events that shaped the city. There is also an art collection on site, as well as changing exhibitions. You can also visit the Eldon House Museum, located in Harris Park. Built in London’s early years in 1834, the house was occupied by the Harris family until the city acquired the house in 1959.

There are many opportunities to enjoy nature in London’s parks and surroundings as well. Victoria Park is a large green area in the northern part of the city center. The park was established in 1874 on a former garrison area. There are several monuments in the park today. You can also choose to take a walk along the river Thames on the Riverwalk or go to Boler Mountain just west of London. On the mountain there are a lot of activities like skiing in the winter and ziplines and hiking in the summer.

In north-east London you can take a trip to Fanshawe Pioneer Village. It is an open-air museum that is beautifully situated along the Thames River, and which was established in 1959. The museum has a large collection of e.g. furniture, textiles and decorative arts related to the city of London and Middlesex County. In the museum area, you can walk to many buildings from 1820 to 1920, and they are divided into periods where you get a good insight into life back then.

Hamilton, Canada

Hamilton

Hamilton is one of the largest cities in the Canadian province of Ontario. The area was first visited by Europeans in the 17th century, but it was only after the American War of Independence when settlers arrived in larger numbers. In 1792, the British Crown acquired the land where Hamilton is today from local tribes.

The British-loyal settlers from the United States were encouraged to settle the purchased land. Later, George Hamilton bought tracts of land which he offered to the government to establish a future city, which became Hamilton. In 1816 the city was chosen as the regional administrative center, and from 1832 there was considerable growth when a canal was dug to Hamilton, which could thereby become a port city.

Niagara Falls, Canada USA

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is the name of some of the world’s most famous and visited waterfalls. The mighty falls are a wonder of nature and an experience for the senses that you will always remember. Every second, three million liters of water flow over the edge of the waterfall, which is located on the border between the United States and Canada.

There is a city on both sides of the border and thus the falls, both are called Niagara Falls, and the two cities are the centres of the large tourism to the area. There are lots of activities and hotels here, so you can get a lot more than the Niagara Falls experience from a trip here.

Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls located as the southern end of the Niagara Gorge, which the Niagara River has cut out of the underground over time. The largest of the waterfalls is the iconic Horseshoe Falls, located like a horseshoe with cascades of water on the very border between Canada and the United States.

In addition to Horseshoe Falls, Niagara Falls consists of American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, both of which are smaller than Horsehoe Falls. Both of the smaller falls are on the American side of the border. Between Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls is Goat Island, and between Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls is Luna Island.

You can see all three falls from the Canadian as well as the American side of the Niagara River. From Canada there is a panoramic view of the falls, and from here you get the best view of Horseshoe Falls and American Falls. From the US you can get very close to all the falls, and there is access to both Goat Island and Luna Island.

The Niagara River connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, and Niagara Falls is located en route between the lakes. The height of the fall is up to 57 meters, and Horseshoe Falls is the most watery in North America. The fall is 790 meters wide, while American Falls, as the second largest, is 320 meters wide.

Geologically, the Niagara River has cut through the subsurface all the way from Lake Ontario, and the waterfalls at Niagara Falls continue to erode about 30 centimeters of rock per year towards Lake Erie. When this process is complete, the falls have reached Lake Erie, at which point the waterfalls cease to exist.

Detroit, USA

Detroit

Detroit is the largest city in the US state of Michigan. Its history began in 1701, when Frenchmen led by Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac established Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit as a trading post on the site of today’s downtown. Later in the century, the place first became British and then American, before Detroit became the capital of Michigan Territory in 1805. At this time, there were less than 750 inhabitants in the town, but that number increased continuously throughout the 19th century.

In 1837, Michigan became a state of the United States, and Detroit remained the state capital until 1848, when the seat of government was moved to Lansing. In the latter half of the 19th century, the city boomed through transport and industrialization, and from 1850 to 1900 the population rose from 21,000 to 285,000. It was a time when wide boulevards were laid out and built in beautiful architecture with ever larger buildings.
