Santander is a city that is the capital of the region of Cantabria along the Spanish north coast. It is known for certain from 1068, and Alfonso VIII of Castile granted rights to Santander in 1187. It was a time when the city consisted of two separate parts, each surrounded by a wall, and there was a bridge between the parts, which was on either side of a stream.
Santander was for many years an important city for Castile, as it had a natural harbor where trade took place with America. The city grew over the centuries, but it was hit by several disasters, with explosions in the port of Santander in 1893 and 1894 and a fire that ravaged large parts of the city in February 1941.
The fire of 1941 destroyed much of Santander’s medieval center, and therefore only a few major old architectural sights can be seen in the city today. One of them is the Catedral de Santander, which is the city’s cathedral. The church was built from the end of the 12th century to the 14th century, but it was later extended and had to be reconstructed after the great fire in 1941. The cathedral reopened in 1953 and is worth visiting for the beautiful interior.
You can visit the Mercado de la Esperanza as well, an atmospheric market building from the end of the 19th century in period architecture. At the market you can find many fish and foods from the region. Just south of the market building is Santander’s town hall on the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The town hall was inaugurated in 1907 and stands as one of the city’s most stately buildings.
When you are in Santander, it is also natural to enjoy the natural surroundings with the water on several sides of the city. In the southern part of the center is the Jardines de Pereda park and the lovely promenade, Paseo de Pereda, where the old passenger terminal Palacete del Embarcadero from 1932 is located. If you continue east, you will come to the maritime museum Museo Marítimo del Cantábrico and the city’s sandy beaches.
At the eastern end of Santander, you can go to the peninsula of La Magdalena, where there is a circuit with fantastic views that you can walk along. Along the way, you can enjoy the panoramic view of the entrance to Santander and the landmark Palacio de la Magdalena, which is a royal summer palace that was built 1909-1911. It is the city of Santander that owns the castle today, and it is one of the city’s most visited places.
Bilbao in northern Spain is a city that really became a tourist destination after the opening of the Guggenheim Museum, but here is also so much more to see. You can look forward to interesting sights, beautiful surroundings and local gastronomy such as the delicious pintxos of the Basque Country, the small pieces of bread with mixed cold cuts.
On a trip to Bilbao, the old town, Casco Viejo, is the place to start. It is a neighborhood with narrow streets, cozy squares and colorful buildings. There are of course many cafes that you can enjoy between sights with the city cathedral, other churches and the Archaeological Museum as some of them.
Burgos is a city in the province of Castilla y León in northern Spain. In Roman times, the current urban area was on the road between Burdigala and Asturica Augusta, which today is respectively Bordeaux and Astorga, but no traces of an actual town formation from this time have been found. In the 7th century, the Moors conquered the region, which the kings of Asturias reconquered, and in connection with the defense against the Muslim Moors, a castle was built in 884. The castle developed into a city, and in 931 it became the capital of the duchy of Fernán González.
Oviedo is a city in northern Spain. It is the capital of the region of Asturias, which is formally a principality. The Kingdom of Asturias was founded by the Visigoth Pelaguis in 720 after a confrontation with the Moors. At that time, the present Oviedo was uninhabited. Two monks founded the city in 761. After a few years, the city had a church and a royal residence, and Oviedo quickly became the capital and a city that established itself with a cathedral on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Part of the development stagnated, however, when the capital was moved to León after the death of Alfonso III in 910.
