A Coruña is a city in the northwestern region of Galicia, and it is a city that is also known by its Spanish name, La Coruña. The city has a large natural harbor, which was used by Phoenicians, Celts and Romans throughout history. The city was called Ardobicum Corunium, and it was for a time the capital of the kingdom of the Swabians. In the 1300s and 1400s, A Coruña flourished as a port for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, and in 1589 England attacked the city under the leadership of Sir Francis Drake. The city did not fall, and on that occasion María Pita became a heroine. Later, the Battle of A Coruña took place in the area in 1809 during the Spanish War of Independence.
Today you can take some lovely strolls in A Coruña’s old town, where the Praza de María Pita square forms the center of the city. Here you can see the Concello da Coruña, the city’s beautiful town hall from the beginning of the 20th century, and houses with galleries at the top, which are typical of Galician architecture. In the square you can also see a statue of María Pita, and from the square you can take a short walk to the city’s port area and the Avenida Porto da Coruña street, where there is a lovely atmosphere. Along the way there are countless buildings with the white galleries on all floors.
You can see several churches in A Coruña as well, such as the Romanesque Igrexa de Santiago da Coruña, which was built in the 12th century, and the contemporary Colexiata de Santa María do Campo. To the east of the center, you can visit the 16th-century fortress Castelo de Santo Antón, which was constructed on an island in the entrance to A Coruña. Today, the fort is open as the city’s archaeological and historical museum. There is also an art museum in the city, the Museo de Belas Artes, where you can enjoy an interesting collection of art from the 16th century to the present day.
A Coruña’s landmark is located by the sea north of the city center. It is the Torre de Hércules lighthouse, whose history dates to Roman times. The tower was originally built in the 1st century and was partially reconstructed in 1791, building on top of the then preserved 34-meter-high lighthouse. Thereby the tower reached its current height of 55 meters. The Torre de Hércules is today included in UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage.
Santiago de Compostela is a city in northwestern Spain. It is the capital of the region of Galicia and world-renowned for being the final resting place of James, one of Jesus’ disciples. The early history of the city began with the settlement of the Swabians in the 4th century. The place came under changing dominions, and for centuries the city was attacked by Moors, Vikings and others, before it was fortified in the 11th century and gained the status of Galician capital. Even then, Santiago de Compostela was known for the relics of James, and the city developed into an increasingly important pilgrimage site.

Vigo is a large city in the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia. However, it was considered a small village for a long time, and a town developed from the 15th century. Turks also attacked, and in the mid-17th century walls and forts were built to defend the city.
