Miskolc is a town in northeastern Hungary on the banks of the Szinva River. The city is one of the largest in Hungary, and historically it is known from the beginning of the 13th century. In 1365, Miskolc formally became a market town, and it developed into the seat of II. Rákóczi Ferenc in the 18th century, which led to the emperor’s troops attacking and burning the town in 1707. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Miskolc was rebuilt in the architectural styles of the time. Later, the city flourished due to not least mining and industrialization.
In the center of Miskolc, you can go for some nice walks, and the square Hősök tere is a good place to start. In the square there are monuments, sculptures and several interesting buildings. To the north is the Földes Ferenc Gimnázium school next to the baroque church Our Lady of Miskolc, which was built 1729-1760 as a monastery church for the adjacent buildings. At the southern end of Hősök tere you can see the city’s large synagogue, which was completed in 1863. West of the square is Deák Ferenc tér with a nice little city park and the beautiful mansion, Erdészeti Palota. In the area behind the mansion is the town’s Orthodox church with a beautiful iconostasis.
You should enjoy a walk along the narrow street Széchenyi út too, where, in addition to a number of cafes and shops, you can see Miskolc’s National Theater from the mid-1800s. At the theater you can visit a museum of the city’s theater history. Further west along Széchenyi út you will find Erzsébet tér, one of the city’s most beautiful squares. It is also possible to enjoy some of Hungary’s famous thermal baths in Miskolc, where the Barlangfürdő bath offers several pools around a natural cave. At the bath you can see the outline of an old Benedictine church.
You can see it all a bit from above as well if you visit the Avas TV Tower, which is a 72-meter-high tower on the Avas ridge southwest of the center of Miskolc. From the tower’s observation deck there is a fine view of the city. A little further west you can see the castle ruins of Diósgyőri vár, which was built as a residence in the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle lay in ruins from the 17th century until 2014, when a partial reconstruction was carried out, so that today you can visit the place as a museum.
Debrecen is a city in eastern Hungary. It is the country’s second largest city and one of the cultural centers of Hungary. Debrecen experienced great growth from the latter half of the 13th century, when the aftermath of the Mongol invasion of that time manifested the city as a regional center. Debrecen also developed as a prosperous market town and later an important site of the Hungarian Reformation. In the middle of the 19th century, the city was a transitional capital, which was during the Hungarian Revolution.
Košice is Slovakia’s second largest city and the regional metropolis in the eastern part of the country. It is a beautiful city located on the river Honrád and relatively close to both Poland, Hungary and Ukraine. The location offers good opportunities for exciting trips in the area.
In the center of Košice there is a lot to see. The well-preserved old town is quite large and with nice variety in the sights. This is where you can see Slovakia’s largest church, the Gothic Saint Elisabeth Cathedral, which stands in the middle of the city.
Budapest is one of the grand capitals along the Danube River, and its magnificent history dates back to Roman times and the military outpost Aquincum. There are still remains of excavated facilities to be seen from the Roman era, and since then, one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe has grown on both sides of the river.
The hilly Buda district stands opposite the flat Pest, and the two boroughs are located on either side of the Danube, which wind through the Hungarian capital. The city is extremely rich in monuments from all periods over the last 2,000 years, and combined with its very beautiful location it offers ample opportunity for many great sights and interesting activities.
