City Introduction

Cluj-Napoca is one of Romania’s largest cities, and for centuries it has been both the main city and the capital of Transylvania, which after being subject to Austria and Austria-Hungary from 1804 to 1920 became part of Romania. The city remains an important commercial and cultural center, and Cluj-Napoca is also one of the country’s largest educational cities with Babeș-Bolyai University.

In Cluj-Napoca there are several beautiful churches that you can visit. On the square Piața Unirii is the Gothic St. Michael’s Church, Biserica Sfântul Mihail, which was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. A short distance to the east on Bulevardul Eroilor is the fine square, Piața Avram Iancu, where the impressive Romanian Orthodox cathedral is located and can be seen opposite the city’s opera house.

There are quite a few interesting museums in Cluj-Napoca as well. The beautiful baroque mansion from the 18th century, Palatul Bánffy on Piața Unirii, houses the city’s national art museum with fine collections of both Romanian and international art. It is also in Cluj-Napoca that you can visit the National Museum of the History of Transylvania, and it gives a good insight into the area’s culture and events over time.

You can also take a walk along the banks of the river Someșul Mic, which winds north of the city center. Here you can for example go west to the park Parcul Central, where the old casino is located. Iulius Park is another green area, but the best-known park is the university’s botanical garden, where there is a wealth of beautiful plants and dedicated areas such as a fine Japanese garden.

Brasov, Romania

Brașov

Brașov is a city located in central Romania close to the mountains of the Southern Carpathians, which have the country’s highest peaks. It is a city that has had many names like Kronstadt, which the Teutonic Order established, and Orașul Stalin, whose name came from the Soviet leader Josef Stalin. The many names also indicate that many different cultures and people have left their mark on the city’s development over time.

There are many things to see in Brașov, and you can start from the central square, Piața Sfatului. There have been markets here since the 14th century, and today the cozy square is surrounded by houses primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries. In the middle of the square is the town hall from 1420, which today houses the regional history museum. In the square you can also see the Black Church, Biserica Neagră, from the 1300s-1400s.
