Burgas is the southernmost of Bulgaria’s beautifully situated larger cities on the Black Sea. It is a city that dates to Thracian, Greek and Roman settlements. The Romans fortified and developed the city, which, however, only grew substantially when Bulgarians came here in larger numbers in the 1500s and 1600s. However, what was decisive for Burgas’s rise to a regional economic center was the opening of the railway to Plovdiv in 1890 and the construction of the port in 1903.
Burgas’ modern center is located around Alexandrovska Street, the city’s main thoroughfare. Alexandrovska connects the railway station with the large square, Ploshtad Troikata. It was here that Bulgaria’s independence was proclaimed to the city’s citizens in 1908, and since then fountains, monuments, etc. have been constructed around the square. In the center stands the Alyosha monument commemorating the battles of the Soviet army during the Second World War, and around the square you can see Burgas’ large cultural center.
There are also several churches to see in Burgas. Saint Cyril and Methodius Cathedral is the largest church in the city. It was built 1894-1907 according to the design of the Italian Ricardo Toscani. Close to the cathedral is Burgas’ small Armenian church, which was built in 1855. In contrast to the church stands the high-rise Hotel Bulgaria. The hotel is 71 meters high, and from the top floor there is a beautiful view of the entire city. From the hotel, you can take a short walk to Burgas’ modern opera house.
In Burgas you can also visit several interesting museums. At the archaeological museum you can see finds from both Burgas and the region around the city. The museum’s collections depict different periods and cultures around e.g. Nessebar and Sozopol. There is also an ethnographic museum, an art museum and the city history museum, which not least tells the history of Burgas from the 19th century to the present day. After visiting the museums, you can enjoy a stroll along the city’s sandy beaches and the parks along the Black Sea.
Varna is Bulgaria’s largest city on the country’s Black Sea coast. It is an ancient cultural city whose history dates to the founding by Ionians in 580 BC. Back then it was called Odessos, and from ancient times buildings from the time of the Roman Empire have been preserved. Later, Odessos became Bulgarian and changed its name to Varna, which over the centuries became an important port city with consulates from countless countries. The city became part of the present Bulgaria after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.

The museum is in a neo-baroque building that was constructed 1923-1929. At Museum of Debrecen Reformed College there are also large and interesting collections. You can see other beautiful buildings as well such as the Csokonai Nemzeti Színház theater from 1865, which is Debrecen’s oldest and largest theater with an architecture inspired by the Moorish style.
