Talkeetna is a small town located roughly halfway between Anchorage and Denali, making it a town on one of the most popular drives in Alaska. Located at the confluence of the Susitna, Chulitna, and Talkeetna rivers, Talkeetna is a popular location for salmon fishing, and it is also the starting point for many trips to Denali National Park.
The town has about 1,000 inhabitants, and its history dates back to 1916, when the Alaska Railroad chose the site as the company’s regional headquarters. Soon after, a post office opened, and a trading post, a sawmill, and a donkey sale were also added as examples from Talkeetna’s early years. The Alaska Railroad began formally dividing parcels of land in 1919, however, many were already inhabited at that time.
Talkeetna is known for the surrounding nature and all the opportunities for activities and excursions that it provides. The town center itself is also known for Main Street and other central streets that make up the Talkeetna Historic District. The district is located on Main Street between C Street and D Street and along C Street and D Street between Front Street and East First Street.
The Talkeetna Historic District is very pleasant to walk in, and here you can see three preserved buildings from the first years of the railroad’s establishment and ten additional houses from before 1940. The best known are the Fairview Inn from 1920-1923, Nagley’s General Store from 1917 and Talkeetna Roadhouse from 1916.
At the end of the main street is Talkeetna Riverfront Park, where you can take a nice walk along the Susitna River. The river is quite wide at this point, where there is also a fine view of some of the mountains of the Alaska Range. You can e.g. see the summit of Denali, North America’s highest mountain.
In addition, Talkeetna is so-called unincorporated, which means that the town does not belong to a municipality and is therefore not subject to this level in the country’s administrative division. Slightly different rules apply, and in 1997 the city’s citizens and council chose the cat Stubbs as honorary mayor of Talkeetna. During his 20 years as the town’s “mayor”, Stubbs could be seen in Nagley’s General Store.
In the center of Talkeetna are several buildings from the town’s era as a railroad and mining town. These houses form the so-called Talkeetna Historic District, which gives a fine impression of Talkeetna from 1916-1936.
The most famous houses in the neighborhood are Nagley’s Store, the Fairview Inn and the Talkeetna Roadhouse, but there are many other buildings that you can also look at, for example, the Talkeetna Schoolhouse from 1936, which today is set up as a museum, where you can learn more about Talkeetna’s history.
Nagley’s Store was built in 1917 by Horace W. Nagley as a store. At the time, Nagley already had businesses in McDougall and Susitna Station, but Talkeetna quickly established itself as the most important town in the area, and there were already nearly 1,000 people living here by 1917.
Horace W. Nagley operated his business until 1947, when he sold his store in town. The new owners moved the house up Talkeetna’s main street to its current location to avoid the risk of flooding from the Susitna River. The store changed its name, but in 1997 got its current name in memory of the original owner. The house is still open welcoming tourists.
Fairview Inn was built as a hotel by the German Bruno ‘Ben’ Nauman and it was completed in 1923. Nauman was already living in Alaska when he bought some land in Talkeetna in 1919 and later started the construction of the Fairview Inn.
An interesting detail about the construction was that it was built without a bar or saloon, which was due to the fact that it was built in Prohibition-era America. Later, a bar was opened, which is still there today. Nauman sold the hotel in 1939, and later it became the property of Horace W. Nagley.
Talkeetna Roadhouse is one of the most famous houses in the town, and it is also known as the Frank Lee House. It was Frank Lee and his brother Ed who built the house in 1916. It was then the largest house in Talkeetna, and it was located a little away from the center, which at that time was closer to the Susitna River than it is today.
Frank Lee ran a freight business from the house, and he had horses in the building’s barn. Over time, the house has been changed quite a bit, and in 1944 a kitchen and rooms were fitted out on the site, which then became a roadhouse serving food to passers-by.
Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska, which is the largest state in the United States. Over half of the state’s population lives in and around Anchorage, which is the economic center of Alaska. Anchorage is also a major transportation hub, with the central location for air traffic between Southeast Asia, North America and Europe.
Anchorage is a fairly new city. In 1915, there was only a tent city at what was then Ship Creek, and the site was established as a stop on the railroad construction from south to the north and to Fairbanks. After this, development went quickly, and houses, shops, a hotel and other things were built in the early years.
Denali National Park and Preserve is a large national park located around the mountain Denali, formerly Mount McKinley. At 6,190 meters, Denali’s summit is the highest point in North America, and with a topographical prominence of 6,155 meters, it is surpassed in prominence only by Mount Everest and Aconcagua. The mountain was named Mount McKinley in 1896, when a gold miner named it after one of the presidential candidates of the time. Since 2015, it has been called Denali, which is the Kojukon tribe’s name for the place.
The park has a size of 24,464 km2, and there is a rich variety in nature, which includes both forests, taiga, tundra, glaciers, snowy landscapes and rock formations. It was the conservationist Charles Alexander Sheldon who in 1906 got the idea to establish the national park. He presented it to others in The Boone and Crockett Club organization, and they worked to establish the national park for the next 11 years until President Woodrow Wilson signed the necessary legislation on February 26, 1917.
