City Map

City Introduction

Heraklion is the largest city on the island of Crete and one of Greece’s largest cities. There has been activity in the area for millennia, with the Minoan culture at nearby Knossos using the site as a port. However, the actual city was founded by Arabs in 824 and later conquered by Byzantine armies. However, it was the subsequent Venetians who left their big mark on the city. In 1913, the city became part of Greece, but you can still see the exciting history in the cityscape.

Heraklion’s central square, Ptateia Eleftheriou Venizélou, is the natural starting point for a walking tour of the city. The square is small but cozy, and in the square you can see the Morosini fountain from the 17th century and the Venetian church of Agios Markos, built in 1239. Close to this is the Loggia, which is Heraklion’s town hall and which was already a meeting place in the 1600s the number. Behind the Loggia is the Venetian church of Agios Titos, which was built in the 16th century. You can walk a little southwest from here to the beautifully decorated Agios Minas Cathedral, built 1862-1895. The cathedral is the largest church in Crete.

In Iraklion, the port is a major asset for the city and a sight to see. The old part of the harbor is dominated by the Venetian fortress Koules, which was built in the years 1523-1540. Venice sank stone-laden ships to create the area where the fortress was built, and it came to play a military role in the 17th century, when Turks attacked the city from the sea side for long periods. In the harbor area, you can also see remains in the form of characteristic round arches from the old shipyard, Arsenali, which was built in the middle of the 16th century, just as you can see Heraklion’s old bastions and fortress walls in several places in the city.

There are also several interesting museums in Heraklion. Along the city’s promenades along the water, you can visit the Historical Museum of Crete, which depicts the history and development of the island through various collections. In the museum you can also see two paintings by El Greco, who was born in Crete. At the city’s archaeological museum you can experience the world’s largest collection of Minoan art, which includes originates from Knossos and Phaistos. The museum has countless highlights in its fine collections.
