City Introduction

Tak is a city that in the 13th century was one of the westernmost cities of the Sukothai Kingdom. Later it came under the rule of the Lanna kings, and despite the fact that the city is not preserved from these periods, it definitely has something to offer visitors.

From Tak descends King Taksin Maharat, who expelled the Burmese in 1767 after their conquest and destruction of Ayutthaya. Taksin was governor of Tak, but he became king and founded the new capital at Thonburi west of Bangkok.

Today, among other things, you can experience the many houses that were built from the 1800s to the beginning of the 1900s in teak wood. The city is also called Thailand’s San Francisco, as a small version of the Golden Gate Bridge spans the Ping River in the city center.

Tak is also known for being a good starting point for trips in the particularly beautiful landscape that surrounds the city. Here are a number of national parks with mountains, rivers, waterfalls, forests and other natural wonders.

Top Attractions

Old Tak
ตั๊กเก่า

Tak was once the center of trade in teak furniture, and this naturally affected the city’s architecture. This is also something you can see in other cities in this part of Thailand, such as Phrae, which lies northeast of Tak.

The city’s inhabitants found it relatively easy to build houses in the valuable wood, and they can best be experienced in the narrow streets in the southern part of Tak’s central districts. The houses are beautifully carved and with many fine details.

Bot Mani Si Bunruang Temple
Wat Bot Mani Si Bunruang
วัดโบสถ์มณีศรีบุญเรือง

Wat Bot Mani Si Bunruang is a temple complex that until 1954 was divided into two separate temples; Wat Bot Mani Rat and Wat Si Si Bunruang. There are several things to see at the place where traditional Thai style meets the Mon style.

The temple’s great chedi was built in the Mon style, while the viharn is distinctly Thai. In the viharne you can admire a 13th-century bronze figure from the Sukothai period.

Close to the temple you can see the city’s statue of King Taksin, Tak’s most famous city boy. Taksin lived from 1734-1782 and was the king who expelled the Burmese after the destruction of Ayutthaya.

Day Trips

Phra Borommathat Temple
Wat Phra Borommathat
วัดพระบรมธาตุ

Wat Phra Borommathat is a temple located at the historical Tak, which is a place located approximately 25 kilometers north of the current Tak. It should not be confused with the old town, which you can experience in Tak today.

The temple itself, Wat Phra Borommathat, is a beautiful sight with many fine details. Here are wooden door panels and roof decorations that are magnificently crafted. In addition, the story of the Buddha is depicted on the wooden window panels of the temples, which are covered with real gold.

Around the historic Tak you can see a number of ruins, such as a pagoda that was built by King Ramkhamhaeng around the year 1300. Legend has it that the pagoda was built as a victory monument over a battle between the king and a king in a rival area, where the battle took place on the backs of elephants.

Bhumibol Dam
เขื่อนภูมิพล(เขื่อนยันฮี)

Bhumibol Dam, named after King Bhumibol, is Thailand’s largest dam, and it dams the Ping River, which also runs through the city of Tak, among other things. Construction of the large facility began in 1953, and the dam was completed 11 years later.

The height from the foundation to the top of the dam is 154 meters, while the width is 384 meters, and the capacity behind the cement is to dam 13,462 million cubic meters of water. The dam controls the water level and thereby prevents flooding, and at the same time, of course, electricity is produced.

The dam is the starting point for boat trips on the artificial dam lake, and one of the popular trips sails over 120 kilometers north towards the Chiang Mai region.
