Pingyao, often referred to as Pingyao Ancient City, is an ancient city located in Shanxi Province, China. Founded during the Zhou Dynasty around the 8th century BC, the city has a history spanning over 2,700 years. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Pingyao became an important economic center, particularly known for its many financial institutions that played a crucial role in China’s economy. The city has preserved its traditional urban planning and architecture from these periods, making it a living museum of Chinese history and culture. A visit to the Wang Family Compound/王家大院, also known as the People’s Forbidden City, provides a fascinating insight into the lives of China’s wealthy families during the Qing Dynasty. The residence palace features impressive architecture with detailed decorations. The palace was built over a period of more than 300 years, from the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty to the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. It covers an area of ​​45,000 square meters and consists of five alleys, five residences and five halls, with a total of 123 courtyards and 1,118 rooms. A visit to the palace allows you to see the many rooms and rooms and learn about the family’s history, and you will understand where the place got its nickname.

For those who want to explore more of Pingyao’s religious heritage, a visit to Shuanglin Si Temple/双林寺 is a great choice for a trip.
