City Introduction

Mysore is a city in India, officially known as Mysore. It has an interesting history and was the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore from 1399 to 1947 and served as the traditional seat of the Wadiyar dynasty. Mysore is not least known for its beautiful Indian heritage sites, palaces and rich culture, which have earned the city the nicknames City of Palaces and Heritage City. The city’s name comes from Mahishur, which means the city of Mahishasura in the Kannada language, and it is named after the mythological demon king Mahishasura, who was defeated by the goddess Chamundeshwari. Mysore has played an important role in the history of South India and has been under the control of various dynasties, including the Gangas, Chalukyas, Cholas and Hoysalas.

During the Wadiyar dynasty, Mysore experienced significant development, especially under Krishnaraja Wadiyar III and Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, who made the city famous for its wide roads, magnificent buildings and elegant parks. Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, who briefly ruled, also contributed to the city’s economic growth by planting mulberry trees and promoting silk production. Mysore is known for its sandalwood and rosewood products, stone sculptures, incense sticks, ivory inlay work and exquisite silk saris. The city has also retained its old charm and attracts thousands of tourists every year, for example during the Dasara festival, when the city comes alive with cultural performances and festivities. And of course, there are magnificent sights in the city.

Mysore city center is a lively area where you can take some interesting walks. In the middle of the city is the most famous attraction in the form of Mysore Palace, and immediately west of the palace is Sayyaji Rao Road and the central square, K.R. Circle. Nearby you can visit Devaraja Market, a popular place for both locals and tourists. The market is filled with colorful stalls selling everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to spices, flowers and handicrafts. A walk through the market provides an authentic experience of local life and commerce, and a stroll along the main street, Sayyaji Rao Road, allows you to shop in boutiques, enjoy local food at street restaurants, and see several historic buildings with beautiful architectural details.

Mysore Palace is undoubtedly the most iconic attraction in the city. Built in 1912 by the Wadiyar dynasty, it stands as a magnificent example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, which characterizes many buildings in India. The palace design incorporates Hindu, Muslim, Rajput, and Gothic styles, and the palace’s details include domes, arches, and intricate carvings. Inside, the palace is equally impressive, with opulent rooms adorned with stained glass windows, ornate chandeliers, and beautiful paintings. Every year during the Dasara festival, the palace is illuminated with over 100,000 lights, creating a magical atmosphere, but the palace is also worth seeing at other times of the year.

Chamundi Hill and Chamundeshwari Temple are other important attractions in Mysore. Chamundi Hill, which rises dramatically above the city, is home to the Chamundeshwari Temple, dedicated to the goddess Chamundeshwari. The temple is a blend of regional Dravidian architecture and holds a spiritual significance that attracts many devotees. The temple has an impressive gopuram, a tower, with decorations depicting mythological scenes. A statue of Mahishasura at the top of the hill commemorates the legend of the goddess’s victory over the demon that gave the city its name.

You can also visit Jaganmohan Palace, another historical site in Mysore. It was originally built in 1861 relatively close to Mysore Palace as a royal retreat. Today, the palace now houses the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery. It is a gallery that contains an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures and other objects that give a good insight into the royal past of the city. During a visit, you can admire works of art by famous artists like Raja Ravi Varma and see a number of historical objects that tell stories of Mysore’s rich cultural heritage. Of course, you can also get a good impression of the palace at the same time.

Mysore also has several museums in addition to the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery that are worth visiting. Established in 1979, the Mysuru Railway Museum shows the development of rail transport in India. The museum has a collection of old locomotives, carriages and various items related to the history of railways, which have been and still are significant for the development of India. The Mysore Sand Sculpture Museum is a unique museum that displays amazing sand sculptures created by artist M N Gowri. The museum has several themes and over 150 sculptures that depict different aspects of Indian culture and history. It is an interesting museum that is also quite unique.

Finally, St. Philomena’s Church is also an impressive architectural gem in Mysore. Built in 1936, the church is one of the largest Catholic churches in India and an excellent example of neo-Gothic architecture. The church stands almost like a European cathedral, and it has two tall spires that are reminiscent of a slightly smaller version of the cathedral in Cologne. It is an imposing facade, and its interior is also a great experience. The interior is adorned with beautiful stained glass mosaics depicting biblical scenes. St. Philomena’s Church is an important religious and cultural landmark in Mysore, which stands in the northern part of the center within easy walking distance of the city’s other attractions.
