City Introduction

Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol and at the same time the fifth largest city in Austria. The town is wonderfully situated in the Inn River Valley with over 2,000 meters/6,500 feet high mountains rising to both the north and south. The nature and the city’s lovely atmosphere make it a good holiday destination both summer and winter.

The city center with pleasant streets is of course a must when in Innsbruck. This is where you will find the city’s most famous sight, the Golden Roof, which is a beautiful house from the year 1500. The city’s cathedral and the Kaiserliche Hofburg residence are other major sights.

Innsbruck’s location along the River Inn is beautiful, and you can enjoy some good walks in the city parks and not least in the mountains, which almost start in the middle of the city. To the north are the mountains in Nordkette, and it is easy to get to the heights with the Hungerburgbahn and the cable car to the top station Hafelekar.

The region around Innsbruck is characterized by mountains and a nice ski terrain in winter. In summer, the green surroundings with villages, hiking trails and lakes are of course also worth a trip. It is also not far to other city experiences, which are easily reached in Austria, Italy and Germany.

Top Attractions

The Golden Roof/Goldenes Dachl: The Golden Roof is the Innsbruck landmark and most famous construction. The roof is located in the old town and was built in the year 1500 of 2,657 gilded copper plates in memory of Emperor Maximilian I’s wedding to Bianca Maria Sforza. The imperial couple just used the balcony under the Goldenes Dachl on special occasions.
Hofburg: Hofburg was the residence of the Imperial Habsburg family, and it was also the castle of Innsbruck. Together with the Hofburg and Schönbrunn in Vienna, it is considered the most important in the country. Hofburg was originally built in the 15th century and it was rebuilt in the 18th century to the baroque style of the time. The interior with i.a. the Riesensaal Hall is very beautiful.

Cathedral of St. James/Dom zu St. Jakob: This is Innsbruck’s cathedral and also a beautiful 18th century building in baroque architecture. The cathedral was built 1717-1724 and is considered one of Tyrol’s most important baroque buildings. The church has two towers and a dome that dominates the city skyline. The interior is elegant and with many fine works of art.
The Court Church/Hofkirche: This is a Gothic church located next to the imperial residence Hofburg. The church was commissioned in 1553 by Emperor Ferdinand I in memory of Emperor Maximilian I. In the church one can see a beautiful interior where Maximilian I’s cenotaph stands; the emperor remained buried in Wiener Neustadt.

Other Attractions

St. Anne’s Column/Annasäule: Annasäule is a monument in the street Maria-Theresien-Straße. The column is from 1704, when it was unveiled to celebrate the expulsion of the last Bavarian troops from Tyrol the year before. It happened on St Anne’s Day, hence the name of the column.
The Old Town Hall/Altes Rathaus: Innsbruck’s Old Town Hall on Herzog-Friedrich-Straße was a townhouse purchased by the city council in 1358 and furnished for the Innsbruck administration. In the middle of the 15th century, the house next door was bought, and at the same time the town hall tower was built. Altes Rathaus was the town hall until 1897.

The Triumphal Arch/Triumphpforte: Innsbruck’s triumphal arch was erected in 1765 on the occasion of the wedding between Archduke Leopold and the Spanish princess, Maria Luisa. There are various symbols on the arch; eg from the Habsburg monarchy.
The New Town Hall/Neues Rathaus: Since 1897, Innsbruck’s town hall has been housed in a building that originally served as a hotel. In 2002, a major expansion in modern design opened, which i.a. includes shops in the arcade RathausGalerien.

Tyrolean State Theater Innsbruck/Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck: This is Tyrol’s State Theater, and the beautiful building has been the scene of countless performances and productions since opening in 1846. However, there has been a theater in the city since 1629, and thereby the tradition goes further back than that current theater.

Day Trips

Nordkette: Nordkette is the name of the majestic mountain range located immediately north of Innsbruck. It is easy to get to the top at Hafelekar at 2,269 meters/7,444 feet. The route up there goes first with the Hungerburgbahn and then with the cable car to the top, where there are fantastic views of Innsbruck and the Alps.
Ambras Castle/Schloß Ambras: This Renaissance castle was built in the 16th century and is located at an altitude of 587 meters/1,925 feet. The place is one of the most visited places in Tyrol. The castle is a museum and belongs to the art museum, Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien. You can e.g. see the magnificent Renaissance hall; The Spanish Hall/Der Spanische Saal.

Neuschwanstein Castle/Schloß Neuschwanstein: Neuschwanstein Castle is one of Germany’s and the world’s most iconic castles. It was built at the foot of the Alps by King Ludwig II, who was also called the fairytale king. The castle was built from 1869 and was ready for use in 1884. It is both the location and the architecture of the castle that are impressive.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen: Like Innsbruck itself, the ski town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen has also been home to the Olympic Games. It was 1936 when the Winter Games were held here. The city is located at the foot of the Alps, which is the area’s biggest attraction and which creates some fantastic scenery around the idyllic city.

Zugspitze: Zugspitze is Germany’s highest mountain with its 2,962 meters/9,717 feet, and unlike many other alpine peaks, the Zugspitze is easily accessible to tourists. At the very top there are three peaks, and here is a restaurant and a view terrace. You can access the top with the Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car from the Austrian town of Ehrwald. You can also use the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway, which runs inside the mountain to the Zugspitzplatt, from where a second cable car takes you to the top. The third possibility is the Eibsee Cable Car.
Kufstein: Kufstein is a lovely town in the Austrian part of Tyrol. The city is the second largest in the region, and the most famous edifice is the castle Festung Kufstein, which is elevated above the city on a hilltop. The castle was first mentioned in the 13th century and later it has been expanded.

Ettal Monastery/Kloster Ettal: In the middle of the southern German mountains you can visit the village of Ettal, which is home to a Benedictine monastery with a large church with a sumptuous interior. The monastery was founded on 28 April 1330 by Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria.
Linderhof: In the beautiful mountain valleys at the foot of the German Alps lies the small beautiful castle Linderhof, which was one of King Ludwig II’s residences. King Ludwig II also started the construction of two other castles in Bavaria, but Linderhof was the only one he managed to see in finished condition.
