Anadyr is Russia’s easternmost city, and it is the port city and administrative center of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. The city’s prehistory started with the construction of a Russian fort in the region in the 18th century, which was the only one of its kind east of the Kolyma River. In the early 19th century, Pyotr Baranov established a trading post close to the present city, which was founded in 1889.
The first building was completed on the name day of Tsarina Maria Fyodorovna, and therefore the city was called Mariinsk, which became Novo-Mariinsk to distinguish the one from an existing Mariinsk in Russia. After several years of fighting, the White Army was defeated by the Red Army of the Soviet Union in 1923, and in the same year Novo-Mariinsk changed its name to Anadyr. In 1965, Anadyr formally became a town, and at that time there were approx. 5,600 inhabitants here. Today, the number of citizens has more than doubled.
Anadyr is a relatively small town, where you can easily form an impression of the town on a short stroll. The central part of the city is the harbour, where you sail to the opposite shore, where the city’s airport is located. Along the harbor is the main street ulitsa Lenina, which has a big city feel and where Anadyr’s sights are located. These are several monuments, the Museum of Cultural Heritage of Chukotka/Музейный центр Наследие Чукотки and the Trinity Cathedral/Троицкий собор, which was built in 2004-2005. You can also walk along ulitsa Mira, where the city’s monument to Vladimir Lenin stands.
