City Introduction

Annapolis is the capital of the state of Maryland. It has a rich and storied history that dates back to its founding in 1649 by Virginian Puritans who sought religious freedom. Originally named Providence, the city was later renamed Annapolis in honor of Princess Anne of Denmark and Norway, who became Queen Anne of Great Britain. Annapolis quickly grew into a significant colonial port and political center. In 1783-1784, it served as the temporary capital of the United States, during which time the Treaty of Paris was ratified in the Maryland State House, officially ending the American Revolutionary War.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Annapolis continued to develop as a hub of education and maritime activity. The establishment of the United States Naval Academy in 1845 cemented the city’s reputation as a center for naval training and education. The academy’s presence has had a lasting impact on the city’s culture and economy. Today, Annapolis is celebrated for its well-preserved colonial architecture, vibrant waterfront, and rich historical heritage, making it a popular destination for visitors seeking to explore America’s past.

There is a lot to see in Annapolis, and you might head out in the historic district, which is a treasure trove of architectural gems, with more 18th-century buildings still standing than any other city in the United States. You can stroll through the cobblestone streets, along Main Street and other streets in the district and admire the well-preserved homes and landmarks that tell the story of the city. The colorful facades of the old houses create a unique streetscape and it is simply just about exploring and enjoying the charm of the city.

Close to Main Street you find Church Circle and State Circle surrounding some of the landmark buildings in the historic Annapolis. Most importantly the Maryland State House, which is the oldest U.S. state capitol in continuous legislative use and is the only state house ever to have served as the nation’s capitol. Construction began in 1772, but was not completed until 1797 because of the American Revolutionary War. The two-story brick Georgian style structure was designed by architect Joseph Horatio Anderson. The building was national capitol from November 26, 1783, to August 13, 1784, and the Congress of the Confederation met in the Maryland State House.

Next to the capitol building is the Government House of Maryland, also known as the Governor’s Mansion since it is the official residence of the state’s governor. It was designed by Baltimore architect R. Snowden Andrews and completed in 1870. Across the street you can see the impressive James Senate Office Building and the beautiful Annapolis Historic Post Office, built 1901 in Georgian Revival architecture. Finally, in Church Circle you can visit St. Anne’s Parish Church, which in its present edition dates from 1858. Church Circle was laid out in 1694 purposely for the first church of Annapolis, and today’s St. Anne’s Parish Church is the third on the spot.

Another place in the historic district is the William Paca House and Garden. It is a beautifully restored Georgian mansion, once the home of William Paca, who signed the Declaration of Independence. The house offers guided tours that provide insights into 18th-century life. You can continue to the Hammond-Harwood House from 1774. It stands as a prime example of colonial architecture and is now a museum with impressive collection of period furnishings and artworks. After the historic tour, the Annapolis City Dock and Waterfront are great places for a walk, a snack, and a boat ride.

Annapolis is also home to the United States Naval Academy, established in 1845. The academy’s campus is right next to the historic district of the city, and it features stunning Beaux-Arts architecture and castle-like construction. The Naval Academy is a must-see place when in Annapolis and it is open to visitors who can tour the grounds, visit the Naval Academy Museum, and the academy’s chapel. The striking dome and the beautiful interior of the chapel is one of several highlights of the visit.
