City Introduction

Athlone is one of the largest towns in inland Ireland and is beautifully located on the River Shannon. Athlone originated at an important ford just above the Shannon. A bridge was built over the river in the 12th century, and in 1129 Turloch Mór Ó Conor had a fort built on the west bank of the ford and thereby the town of Athlone. Throughout the 17th century wars in Ireland, Athlone and the town’s castle were a strategically important place for the warring parties. During the Williamite Irish Wars, Athlone was besieged and defeated by the English King William’s troops in 1690-1691.

Today, Athlone Castle still forms the center of the town, and the neighborhoods on both sides of the Shannon offer pleasant walks in the town and along the river. Athlone Castle was built in its original version in 1129, but the current stone castle dates to 1210. The castle’s core tower is the central part of the building, and around it, on a visit, you can take a closer look at all the castle’s thick walls and strong fortifications. The place has been open as a museum since 1966.

Opposite Athlone Castle is the impressive Catholic church, Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built 1932-1939. It is a beautiful church where you can see some fine stained-glass windows which were produced by Richard King. Next to the church you can visit the Luan Gallery, which is located along the Shannon. The gallery has changing exhibitions of various interesting Irish and foreign art. South of Athlone Castle you can visit Sean’s Bar, which is the oldest pub in Ireland, and if you cross the Shannon, some of Mid Ireland’s most popular shopping centers are located here, Athlone Town Center and Golden Island.

Athlone and the area around the town is also known for its good fishing opportunities, and nature is also popular with bird watchers. Another good option for getting out into the region is the Athlone to Mullingar Cycleway, a 42-kilometer cycle and walking path which follows the disused railway line between Athlone and Mullingar, which lies east of the town. The railway line was opened in 1850 and closed in 1987, and today you can enjoy the journey through the lush Irish landscapes.
