City Map

City Introduction

Banja Luka is a city in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the country’s second largest city and the administrative center of the Serbian province Republika Srpska. Banja Luka grew in the Middle Ages before it was conquered by the Muslim Ottomans in 1527. The Ottomans built and developed Banja Luka, while major modernization only took place under the rule of Austria-Hungary in the late 1800s.

Today, the center of Banja Luka is located around the square Trg srpski vladara, where, among other things, can see the town hall. The Cathedral of the Savior is also located here, and it is the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of Banja Luka. It is an impressive construction from 1925-1929, which was demolished by the Croatian Ustaše in 1941. The cathedral was rebuilt after the Yugoslav era and reopened in 2004.

Another religious building is the Ferhat Pasha Mosque, which is a beautiful example of Ottoman architecture from the 16th century. The mosque was destroyed in 1993 and rebuilt in 2016. In the city center you can also visit the Museum of Republika Srpska, where you can see archaeological, ethnological and natural history collections. A short stroll from the museum is the square Trg Krajine, which is the modern center with shops and narrow streets.

In Banja Luka, you should also visit the city’s old fortress, Tvrđava Kastel, located in the area along the river Vrbas. The fortress is one of the landmarks of Banja Luka, and it is quite well preserved with its fortress walls and defense towers. The defensive position dates back to pre-Roman times, while the current fortress is a more recent construction. At the fortress is the bridge Gradski Most, from which there is a fine view of Vrbas.
