City Introduction

Brighton is a fashionable seaside resort located on the south coast of England. Its history goes back to Celtic settlements, and then the Romans conquered the area along with the rest of England. During this time, the Romans built villas in the city. Later the village of Bristelmestune was referred to, and at the end of the 11th century Brighton was a fishing village with around 400 inhabitants.

The population increased over time to 4,000 in the middle of the 17th century but decline hit the city and the number of inhabitants was halved. In the latter half of the 18th century, however, Brighton boomed, and this time it was tourists to the city’s baths who created the growth. Hotels and more were built in the Victorian era, and Brighton was home to more than 120,000 people in 1901.

Today, you can still experience a lovely atmosphere of a seaside resort when visiting Brighton. The city’s promenades along the English Channel are the place for some lovely walks and to enjoy the epitome of Brighton’s glorious location. This is also where you can go for a walk along the 525-meter-long Brighton Palace Pier, where there are restaurants, good views and an amusement park at the far end on the sea.

Palace Pier is the third pier of this type in the city. In 1823 The Royal Suspension Chain Pier was built, but it was destroyed by a storm in 1896. West Pier was a pier that opened in 1866. It closed in 1975 and today the remains of it can be seen in the sea to the west of Palace Pier.

There is also much else to see along the water. Close to the Palace Pier, you can visit the city’s Sea Life aquarium, which in its original version opened as early as 1872. Just east of the aquarium, you can try driving the world’s oldest operating electric railway, Volk’s Electric Railway, which was built by Magnus Volk and opened in 1883.

The course of the tracks runs along a stretch of 1,640 meters, and at the eastern end you can go for a walk on Brighton’s large marina. West of Palace Pier, you can see the city and the sea from above in the British Airways i360, which is a 162-meter-high observation tower with a large glass dome with panoramic views in all directions.

You can also make a walk into Brighton, where there are more things to see. North of Palace Pier is Old Steine Gardens, and north of it you come to Pavilion Gardens, where Brighton’s probably best-known building is located. It is the lavish Indian-inspired palace, the Royal Pavilion, which was built in 1815-1823 by the British royal house. The interior is fantastic with a magnificent banquet hall.

You can visit the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery as well, where there are extensive historical and archaeological collections, art etc. It is also a good idea to take a walk in the so-called Brighton Lanes, which is a labyrinth of narrow lanes and hidden squares that lie between Brighton’s beaches and North Street. Brighton Lanes dates to the 16th century, when the town was a small fishing village.

Canterbury, England

Canterbury

Canterbury is a city on the River Stour in Kent in south-east England. The city has a long history and in Roman times was an administrative center with the name Durovernum. During this time city walls and city gates were constructed, and a monastery was founded in 597, close to the site where Canterbury Cathedral was later built. It was established by Augustine of Canterbury, who was sent to England as a missionary.

Canterbury became a place of pilgrimage when Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the cathedral in 1170. The plague hit the city in 1348, and over the following centuries the population dropped from 10,000 to 3,000. In 1413, Henry IV was buried in the city’s cathedral, and in 1448, Canterbury was given a borough court with a mayor and a sheriff. In the 19th century, the city grew, and the railway arrived in 1830. During World War II, the city was hit by great destruction during Luftwaffe bombings.
