City Introduction

Cambridge is a city located on the River Cam in the area north of London. The city was already settled in Roman times, and after the Roman Empire conquered England around the year 40, Cambridge became an important military post with the name Duroliponte. After the retreat of the Romans, the city was settled by anglers, and Vikings arrived in 875.

Trade with the Vikings made the city grow. Later, the Anglo-Saxons arrived, and William the Conqueror built a castle in the town in the 11th century. The first college in Cambridge was founded in 1284 by people from the university town of Oxford, and today there are more than 30 separate colleges on the campus, which over the centuries have grown to be the city’s trademark.

Today you can enjoy a cozy city center where you can go for some nice walks. In the center is Cambridge Market Square as one of the city’s natural meeting places. From the square there is access to the city’s narrow streets and shops, and you can also see the Holy Trinity Church, St Andrew the Great Church and Great St Mary’s in the neighborhood.

You can walk a little north to the Round Church, formally called the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The church was built around 1130 with inspiration from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. It is one of the few medieval round churches in England. You can go further around, but you can also try a calm sailing trip on the river Cam, where you are pushed forward in flat boats in the form of so-called punting.

The city’s many colleges are located around the center of Cambridge, and many of them are both famous and worth seeing. You should pass by King’s College, which was founded by King Henry VI in 1441. Originally, 12 students attended the college, but that number was soon increased, and the students were chosen from among the best students at Eton College. Gradually, the college was built larger, and the neo-Gothic Front Court building was completed in 1828.

A particularly beautiful part of the college is the King’s College Chapel, which was built in 1446 and it is today the city’s landmark. The church’s nave, chancel, vaults and impressive stained-glass windows provide a magnificent experience and atmosphere when visiting. You can also see Peter Paul Ruben’s altarpiece, painted in 1634 for a monastery in Leuven.

Trinity College is another of the exciting colleges in Cambridge, from which many Nobel laureates have come over the years. The college was founded in 1546 by King Henry VIII, and its buildings mainly date from the 16th-17th centuries. This goes for the main entrance to Trinity College, the Great Gate, which leads into the Great Court, the largest college campus in the city. Here too you can see a beautiful church if the visit Trinity College Chapel.

If you want to make a third college on your stroll, Queen’s College from 1448 is a good choice. You can also visit the Fitzwilliam Museum, which is an art and antiquities museum located in a classicist building south of the city center. The university’s botanical garden is also located in this part of the city, and it is considered one of the finest in England.
