Carcassonne is one of the most exciting and famous cities in southern France. Today, Carcassonne is an administrative town in the department of Aude, but the area has been inhabited for millennia. The current fortress town dates to the Celtic settlement of Carsac, which from the 5th century BC was a few kilometers from today’s French city.
Gauls came to the city around 300 BC, and later the strategically important city became part of the Roman Empire. The Romans fortified the hilltop, and the city was given the status of colonia. The oldest parts of the preserved walls date from this Gallic-Roman period. Later, Visigoths, Saracens and Franks arrived, and they all strengthened the city’s defenses. The rest is history, which made Carcassonne a southern French town with a medieval core behind particularly well-preserved and impressive walls.
The largest and best-known attraction in Carcassonne is the Cité de Carcassonne, which is the city’s medieval fortress, which was restored in the mid-1800s under the leadership of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. The fortress was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1997, and it is an impressive structure that can be seen from a long distance before reaching the city.
The fortress encloses the entire medieval city of Carcassonne, and along the two outer walls there are 53 towers and many buildings that acted as bastions against possible attacks. Behind the walls is the city’s old castle, which itself is protected behind additional fortifications. The construction period of the entire complex was from Roman times to the Middle Ages, and you can see the difference in the details of, for example, the brickwork.
In the city you can also see the Pont Marengo bridge that crosses the Canal du Midi. The bridge was built in the year 1800 and is a popular place to follow the boat traffic on the famous canal. At the bridge there are sluice gates, and the channel is quite narrow at this point. You can also walk to the Pont Vieux, which is another interesting bridge in the city. Pont Vieux was completed as the current stone bridge in 1320, where it replaced a wooden bridge from the mid-12th century.
There are also several churches in Carcassonne, with the city’s cathedral as the most important. Cathédrale Saint-Michel was constructed in the 13th century as a parish church dedicated to Saint Michael. The church was later fortified, and it gained the status of a Catholic cathedral in 1803. You can also see the Basilique des Saints Nazaire et Celse, which is a 12th-century church. However, there was already a church on this site from the 5th century, but no parts of it have been preserved. The current basilica was erected as the city’s cathedral, which it was until 1803.
