City Introduction

Concord is the capital of the state of New Hampshire. Its history began in 1725 when the Penacook Plantation was established and on the site the settlement grew into what in 1734 became the town of Rumford. In 1765, Rumford changed its name to Concord at the behest of Governor Benning Wentworth. The name signified harmony and was chosen to bring an end to a dispute between the towns of Rumford and Bow.

Today, Concord is one of America’s smaller state capitals, but despite its size, there is much to see in the city. The most famous building is the government building New Hampshire State House, which was designed by the architect Stuart Park and built in the years 1815-1818. The building was expanded in 1910, but the state legislature still meets in the original setting.

The New Hampshire State House is located along Main Street, which with its many old redstone buildings and good atmosphere is an attraction. Directly opposite the State House is the Eagle Hotel building from 1827. The hotel was an institution in the city, and several presidents and many other famous people have visited the hotel and its restaurant over the years.

You can follow the trail of several presidents a short distance south from the Eagle Hotel on Main Street. Here is Phenix Hall, where Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt have given speeches. You can walk to the north end of Main Street to the Pierce Manse building as well, an on-site house museum where President Franklin Pierce lived for a few years. The house was built in the 1830s and moved to its current location in 1971.

If you want to see more of Concord’s larger buildings, you can take a walk around the New Hampshire State House, where you can see St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the New Hampshire State Library, the Legislative Office Building and the New Hampshire Historical Society, where changing exhibits on themes from the state’s history are shown.

Manchester, New Hampshire, USA

Manchester

Manchester is one of the largest cities in the US state of New Hampshire. Its history began in 1722 when John Goffe settled at the falls of the Merrimack River and established a dam and sawmill in what came to be known as Old Harry’s Town. In 1727 the place was called Tyngstown, and 24 years later the town changed its name again; this time to Derryfield.

In 1807, Samuel Blodget built sluices and a canal past the town’s waterfall, and this provided good conditions for industrial development. Therefore, Blodget saw an American version of the English industrial city Manchester as a vision of the future, and in 1810 Manchester got its current name. In the city, the company Amoskeag Manufacturing Company developed a large textile industry, and in 1838 Amoskeag designed Manchester as a so-called company town.

Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Boston

Boston is a city in the state of Massachusetts and thereby in so-called New England, and it is not simply because it is located in the northeastern corner of the United States close to Europe. You feel British culture here more than anywhere else in the United States, but of course the many benefits of American culture are also part of daily life and the cityscape here.

Boston’s many quaint streets and neighborhoods also hold much of the American independence history in the years of struggle with England. It was in the northeastern United States that the cradle of the present United States was, and this is where the rebellion against the colonial power of England took place.

Portland, Maine, USA

Portland

Portland is the largest city in the US state of Maine. The city’s history dates back to 1632, when the area was settled, and Casco was established as a trading post and fishing village. In 1658, the Massachusetts Bay Colony took over the area, and on that occasion the town’s name was changed to Falmouth.

Over the next hundred years, Falmouth was attacked and destroyed several times, but after the American War of Independence, a harbor was built in Falmouth Neck, and it created great growth and development. In 1786, the townspeople decided to change Falmouth Neck’s name to Portland, after an English island. Maine became a state in the United States in 1820, and Portland became the state capital. However, that status only lasted until 1851, when Augusta took over as Maine’s government town.
