Craiova is a city located between the Danube and the Carpathian Mountains in southern Romania. On the site was the Dacian and Roman city of Pelendava, which was the capital of the region of Oltenia. Later, the Craiovești noble family from the city became a leading family in the development of Wallachia, and as a result, Craiova has been one of the important urban centers of present-day Romania for centuries.
In Craiova there is a lot to see, and Piața Mihai Viteazul square is a good place to start a walk. Here is the large city hall, which was built in neo-Romanian style in 1912-1913 as one of the city’s finest buildings. In the square there is also a musical fountain, a statue of the national hero Mihai Viteazul and several green spaces such as the English park behind the town hall building.
From Piața Mihai Viteazul, it is not far to Craiova’s other attractions. You can, for example, visit the city’s art museum, located in the beautiful mansion, Palatul Constantin Mihail. In the center is also Craiova’s modern National Theatre, the city’s large university building and churches such as Biserica Madona Dudu and Saint Demetrius Cathedral. You can also discover the history of the city at the Oltenia Museum.
There are several interesting things to experience around Craiova as well. To the north lie the Carpathians and the beautiful Horezu monastery, which is on UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage. From Horezu there is a view of the Carpathians, which you can also visit in many places. One of the popular places is at the river Olt, which cuts through the mountain range, and where there are also hot springs in several places.
