Dundalk is a town located along the Castletown River on the east coast of Ireland. The area has been inhabited since Neolithic times, while the town of Dundalk was established as a Norman fortress after 1169. In the 14th century, the town was attacked, destroyed and taken by Edward the Bruce, and attacks continued for the following centuries, due to Dundalk’s status as a fortified border town towards Ulster in the north.

Throughout the 17th century, the city changed hands several times between the English and Irish Catholics. In the 18th century, Dundalk had become English, and the town could develop peacefully. Dundalk’s current town plan was largely laid out during this time. In the 1800s, the town developed industrially, but the 1900s again made Dundalk a border town, this time at the border with Northern Ireland.

Today, Dundalk’s center is cozy for a nice stroll between the city’s sights. Market Square is the center of Dundalk, and here you can see Dundalk Courthouse, the city’s neoclassical courthouse from 1819. From here you can walk along Crowe Street to An Táin Arts Centre, an arts center with a theater housed in the town’s beautiful Town Hall building. The Town Hall was originally built in 1859 by The Corn Exchange Company, and the house was then acquired by the town of Dundalk to rebuild it as a theater.

Close to this is St. Patrick’s Church, which is the city’s main church. St. Patrick’s Church was built in Neo-Gothic style in the mid-1800s, with the bell tower as an extension in 1903. The church has a beautiful interior, where you can notice many fine stained-glass windows.

In front of the church, you can see Kelly’s Monument, which is a memorial that was erected in 1879 to commemorate a tragedy at sea in 1858, when the ship Mary Stoddart sank in Dundalk Bay. Another attraction in the city is Dundalk station, which is considered the most beautiful on the line between Dublin and Belfast. The current station was opened in 1894.

When you are in Dundalk, you can also visit places around the city and learn more about the region at the County Museum Dundalk. The museum tells the story of County Louth and is housed in a building dating from 1780 that was formerly a distillery warehouse.

There are many things to see in the immediate vicinity of Dundalk, and one of the popular places is the town of Blackstone, which is a sort of suburb of Dundalk along the coast. In Blackstone, you can take a nice walk along Main Street, where the town’s promenade along the sea is located. Here there are cozy places to eat and a lovely and interesting view of the tide, which significantly changes the coastline several times a day.
