City Introduction

El Calafate is a charming town in the Argentine part of Patagonia. It is located along the shores of Lago Argentino, and the town serves as the gateway to the stunning Los Glaciares National Park. You probably plan to visit the magnificent Perito Moreno Glacier west of town, but El Calafate has a lot to offer itself. So the picturesque destination offers you both natural beauty and cultural experiences.

You must stroll El Calafate’s main street, Avenida del Libertador, which is lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. Here, you can try the traditional Patagonian cuisine, including the famous Argentine barbecue, known as asado. Avenida del Libertador goes through the town from east to west, and the other sights in El Calafate are easily accessible from the street. Laguna Nimez Reserve is an example. It is a great place for a stroll through a serene bird sanctuary where you can observe a variety of local bird species in their natural habitat.

If you are interested in history, the museum Centro de Interpretación Histórica offers insights into the region’s past, from indigenous cultures to the arrival of European settlers. You can also visit the Glaciarium Patagonian Ice Museum/Glaciarium Museo del Hielo Patagónico, which is a modern museum dedicated to the fascinating world of glaciers. It provides interactive exhibits and a lot of information about the glaciers of region.

Perito Moreno Glacier

Perito Moreno Glacier is an easily reached glacier just west of the town of El Calafate in Argentine Patagonia. The glacier is a part of the well-visited Los Glaciares National Park and a huge tourist asset of the region.

When you visit Perito Moreno Glacier, you can experience it up close and walk a series of boardwalks that offer stunning views of the glacier’s towering ice walls. One of the most thrilling aspects of visiting this glacier is witnessing the dramatic calving of ice, where smaller og larger chunks of ice break off and crash into the waters of the lake Lago Argentino below. It is a spectacular sight.

Perito Moreno Glacier is an inland glacier calving in Lago Argentino. You can admire the natural wonder from the boardwalks or go on a guided ice trekking tour. You can also choose a spectacular boat tour providing a unique perspective of the wall of ice, bringing you close to the impressive glacier.
