Frankfort is the capital city in the state of Kentucky. Frankfort was once a ford across the Kentucky River, before English explorers arrived in the 1750s. Frankfort was founded in 1786, when James Wilkinson purchased a 110-hectare tract of land on the north side of the Kentucky River, which developed as downtown Frankfort. Wilkinson later promoted Frankfort as the new state capital, when Kentucky became a state in 1792. Frankfort won the competition against other bids and has since then been the political center of Kentucky. Today, Frankfort is one of the smaller U.S. capitals with the population giving the river city a cozy small-town atmosphere.
You should start the visit in the historic downtown district located on the old plots of land and street just north of the Kentucky River. Main Street and St Clair Street form the primary roads sided with heritage buildings from the history of Frankfort. Besides the streetscape, there are several sights in the district with the Old State Capitol building as one of the most important. It was designed by Gideon Shryock and completed in 1830 in Greek Revival style. It served as the state’s capitol until 1910, when the present capitol was opened. The Old State Capitol now serve as a museum of Kentucky’s political history.
Liberty Hall Historic Site is another highlight of Frankfort’s heritage and architectural value. Built in 1796, It is a Federal-style mansion from 1796 that was the home of Senator John Brown. It is now open as a museum that showcases the life and times of one of Kentucky’s founding families. At 420 High Street you can see the Old Governor’s Mansion from 1798. It is the official residence of the lieutenant governor of Kentucky. Almost next door, you can visit the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History which features both permanent and temporary exhibitions about the history of Kentucky.
At the southern end of Capitol Avenue in the southern part of Frankfort, you can see the Kentucky State Capitol. It was completed in 1910 as a grand scale building in the otherwise low residential area. The building was designed by Frank Mills Andrews and is a great example of the Beaux-Arts architecture of its time. The interior was inspired by classical French designs as seen on the staircases. In the rotunda you can see statues of notable historical figures from Kentucky, among them Abraham Lincoln and earlier on Jefferson Davis as well.
For recreational purposes there are several place to go for a walk. The Frankfort Cemetery was established in 1844, and here you can see the resting place of the American pioneer Daniel Boone, Vice President Richard Mentor Johnson, Kentucky governors and many more. You can also choose a walk in the natural beauty of Frankfort in Leslie Morris Park on Fort Hill just north of downtown Frankfort. There are nice trails in the park where you can enjoy scenic downtown overlooks and visit the historic Sullivan House, where you get an impression of Frankfort in the 1800s.
Louisville is the largest city in the US state of Kentucky. It originated as a settlement at the falls of the Ohio River, which at this point was the only barrier to free river navigation in the region. Settlement began on Corn Island in the river in 1778, and two years later it formally became a city named Louisville, named after King Louis XVI of France.
Louisville grew rapidly as a transit point for boats passing the falls, and by 1828 the population had risen to 7,000. During the American Civil War, Louisville avoided major destruction, but a tornado razed the city center in 1890.
Cincinnati is one of the largest cities in the US state of Ohio. The city’s history goes back to 1788, when settlers came to the region and founded several settlements such as Losantiville, which in 1790 was named Cincinnati. The name came from The Society of the Cincinnati, whose name came from the Roman Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus.
After a few decades, the city had approximately 2,500 inhabitants, and with paddle steamers on the Ohio River from 1811, Cincinnati developed into an important river port with trade to St. Louis, New Orleans, and other cities. The production of pork meat developed the town in these years, as did the opening of first canals and later railways. Industry boomed in Cincinnati, whose population reached 115,000 in 1850.
Charleston is the capital and largest city of the US state of West Virginia. The city’s history began in 1794 with a decision in the Virginia legislature to reserve an area for the city of Charlestown. The city was established, and it was renamed Charleston in 1818. In the first half of the 19th century, there were established a school, a newspaper and various production and trade, and the city had approximately 1,000 inhabitants in the middle of the century.
During the American Civil War, the western part of the state of Virginia was separated as a new state, West Virginia, and Charleston became its capital in 1870. As the capital, the state government building was built here, and Charleston grew as the new administrative center. In the 1900s, industry and transport caused new growth in the city, where at one point more than 85,000 lived within the city limits.
