City Introduction

Girona is a Catalan city in northeastern Spain. Its history goes back several thousand years to the Iberian Ausetans. Later, the Romans built a citadel here in the city that was then called Gerunda. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city was ruled by the Visigoths before it was conquered by the Muslim Moors in 715. The city changed rule several times until the Moors were finally defeated in 1015. In the same century, Girona achieved status of a city, and over the years it gained a large and active Jewish congregation. Over the next several centuries, Girona experienced countless sieges and conquests before the city walls were brought down in the 19th century, which gave new development to the city.

There is a lot of cozy places in the center of Girona, which is located on both sides of the river Onyar. You can start a stroll in the area at the elegant square called Plaça de la Independència, which, like in many other Spanish cities, is surrounded by identical buildings and archways. There used to be an Augustinian monastery with a garden here, but the area was included in a new town plan and laid out in the 1850s and 1860s. From the square you can walk through Girona’s western part of the center, where the Plaça de la Constitució is a modern urban space with the old church, Parròquia de Santa Susanna del Mercadal.

The Onyar’s course through Girona divides the city into the old town to the east and the newer part of the center to the west. The course of the river and promenades are worth seeing, with multi-colored houses built at the waterfront. There are many footbridges over the river on the interesting stretch north of Plaça de Catalunya, a modern square built on top of the river. From the square you can go east to the park Jardins de la Muralla, where you can see Girona’s old city walls. From the park, you can follow the preserved walls almost all the way east of the old town.

The old town with all its sights and attractions is behind the course of the former walls. One of the many highlights is Girona Cathedral, a beautiful example of Catalan Gothic architecture. The church was built from the 11th century and is located beautifully at the end of some steps. The church has the world’s widest Gothic nave and is famous for a Romanesque embroidery of the genesis from around the year 1100. In front of the cathedral is the Portal de Sobre gate and the church Basílica de Sant Feliu, which was the main church of the city before the consecration of the cathedral. Close to this you can visit the local history museum, Museu d’Història de Girona. A walk in this part of the city should also include a stroll along Carrer de la Força, which runs parallel to the river Onyar.
