City Introduction

Graz is a city in southeastern Austria. It is in the state of Styria and is the country’s second largest city. Graz is an old city that was already an important trade city in the 12th and 13th centuries. In the following centuries, Graz became a city of residence, and in 1585 the city’s university was founded. In the same period, new fortifications were built around the city, and they were used during several battles with Napoleon’s troops from 1797 to 1809. In 1999, Graz’s old town was added to UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage.

Today, the inner city of Graz is a beautiful and pleasant experience to enjoy a stroll, and there are many sights. Hauptplatz is the city’s central square, and here is Graz’s impressive town hall from the 1880s. From Hauptplatz you can walk along the city’s narrow streets such as Herrengasse, where the Landeszeughaus house from 1642-1644 is located. The house is a museum with one of the world’s finest collections of weapons and armor. If you continue along Herrengasse, you come to the Opernring and Graz’s neo-baroque opera house, which opened with Friedrich Schiller’s drama William Tell in 1899.

Graz offers several interesting buildings along the street Hofgasse as well. Here you can e.g. see the city’s cathedral, which was built 1438-1462 as the Hofkirche. Next to the church you can see the mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II, who was born in Graz in 1578. Along the Hofgasse you will also find the city’s playhouse and the castle Grazer Burg, which was built in several periods during primarily the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle was originally the residence of Duke Friedrich V. Behind Grazer Burg you can go for a walk in the lovely castle park Burggarten, where there is an orangery and other facilities.

Just north of Graz’s old town is the Schloßberg, a rock on which the ruins of the city’s historic fortress are located. There are several ways to get to the top of the mountain. You can take the Schloßbergbahn funicular, an elevator inside the mountain or the stairs in the direction of the old town. The most famous building on Schloßberg is the bell tower, which was built in the 16th century. In addition to that, you can see different parts of the old fortress, the 94-meter-deep Türkenbrunnen and, in general, an unforgettable view of the Austrian metropolis.
