City Introduction

Greensboro in North Carolina is a city rich in history, cultural heritage, and interesting sights. It was founded in 1808 and named after Major General Nathanael Greene, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. Greensboro was a small settlement in its early days, but it has grown into a busy urban center. The city played a significant role during the Civil War and later became a hub for the textile industry, which fueled the growth and development in Greensboro throughout the 1800s and early 1900s.

In the mid-1900s, Greensboro was a focal point of the Civil Rights Movement. The city gained national attention in 1960 when four African American students from North Carolina A&T State University staged a sit-in at the Woolworth’s lunch counter. It sparked a wave of similar protests across the country, and the event is commemorated at the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, located in the very building where the sit-in took place in 1960.

Today, Greensboro boasts a diverse array of architectural styles, reflecting its rich history and cultural evolution. The so-called Downtown Greensboro Historic District is a good place to start exploring the city with Elm Street as the central artery. The many listed commercial buildings were built between about 1885 and the 1930s in a variety of popular architectural styles including Italianate and Art Deco. One of the most prominent buildings is the Jefferson Standard Building in N Elm Street, completed in 1923 and the tallest highrise in North Carolina till 1927.

There are a lot of other notable heritage buildings in the downtown area like the Carolina Theatre from 1927 in S Greene Street, the former American Exchange National Bank Building from 1920 in Elm Street, and the old Woolworth’s store. That store was a focal point in the city at the Greensboro sit-ins, the series of nonviolent protests in February to July 1960. The sit-ins led to the F. W. Woolworth Company department store chain removing its policy of racial segregation in the Southern United States.

There are some interesting museums in Greensboro as well. One of them is the Weatherspoon Art Museum, which is located at the University of North Carolina a bit west of the city center. The museum houses one of the largest collections of modern and contemporary art in the Southeast. Focus is on American artists, and there is international at as well. Collections feature artists such as Matisse, Warhol, and de Kooning. Close by is the historic house museum, Blandwood Mansion, built as a Federal style farmhouse in 1795. The mansion was home to North Carolina governor John Motley Morehead under whose ownership it was transformed into its Italian Villa Style appearance.

If you want to explore the natural beauty of Greensboro, the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden is a great choice. In the lovely garden, you will find beautifully landscaped gardens and walking paths through a variety of plantings. The garden is a popular spot for both locals and visitors, providing a peaceful retreat close to the heart of the city. The City of Greensboro Country Park is a lovely place too. It is a large park with trails, lakes, and space for long walks. The Greensboro Science Center is at the park, as is the Battlefield Visitors Center at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.

Raleigh, North Carolina, United States

Raleigh

Raleigh is the capital and one of the largest cities in the US state of North Carolina. The city’s inland location was chosen in 1788 as the site for a new capital of North Carolina, so that attacks along the coast could be avoided. In 1792, Raleigh was founded and named after Sir Walter Raleigh, and over the following decades many institutions were built in the young city, such as the government building, the North Carolina State House.

In 1853, the first statewide exposition was held in Raleigh, and four years later Peace College opened as the city’s first institution of higher education. By the beginning of the 20th century, the population had grown to over 15,000, and streetcars were running in Raleigh’s streets. Throughout the century, the number of inhabitants increased steadily, and the city grew both with new high-rises as well as new suburbs.

Charlotte, North Carolina, United States

Charlotte

Charlotte is the largest city in the US state of North Carolina. The area was settled in the mid-1700s in the current suburb of Elizabeth. Charlotte formally became a town in 1768 and named after Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who was King George III’s queen. In 1775, the so-called Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence is believed to have been signed in Charlotte, and it was allegedly the first declaration of independence in the 13 British colonies in the later United States.

In the first half of the 19th century, the city was the center of gold production, and there was a mint in Charlotte. Manufacturing and banking made the city flourish, and growth took off after the American Civil War, when the city became a hub for the region’s railroads. In 1890, more than 11,000 inhabitants lived here, and in 1910 Charlotte became the state’s largest city with 34,000 residents.

Richmond, Virginia, United States

Richmond

Richmond is the capital and one of the largest cities in the US state of Virginia. The English exploration of the area dates to 1607, and 30 years later Thomas Stegg established a trading post here. In 1645, Fort Charles was built on the site, but it took until 1733 before the small settlement was named Richmond, because the river here reminded of the Thames in England. In 1737 the city was laid out according to William Mayo’s plan, and in 1779 Richmond replaced Williamsburg as the state capital.

After American independence, Richmond became an important industrial city and canals were built for the important river transport. During the American Civil War, Richmond was the largest industrial city in the southern states, and it was the capital of the Confederate States of America in the years 1861-1865. After the Civil War, growth came again in the city, which once more became an industrial city with, among other things, a large tobacco production, and in 1888 the USA’s first electric tram line opened in Richmond.
