City Introduction

Guilin is a city in the northeastern part of the Guangxi Zhuang region, and is known as one of the most scenic cities in China. The city’s name means forest of sweet osmanthus, referring to the many osmanthus trees that bloom in the area and fill the air with their fragrance. Guilin is famous for its spectacular karst landscapes, which have been formed through millions of years of erosion of the area’s limestone plateau. The distinctive geological formations, with their high peaks and lush vegetation, attract visitors from all over the world.

The city’s history dates back to the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC), when the first administration was established in the area. Since then, Guilin has been an important political, economic, and cultural center in the region. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, the city experienced a flourishing period, resulting in many historical artifacts and sites that can still be seen today. Among the most notable are the Jingjiang Prince’s Villa and the many ancient pagodas and temples that adorn the city’s landscape.

Guilin is best known for its many scenic attractions, with the Li River winding through the city and the surrounding mountains. A cruise on the Li River allows visitors to experience the breathtaking scenery up close, including views of iconic karst peaks, lush valleys and traditional fishing villages. It is also home to the Reed Flute Cave, an impressive limestone cave filled with colorful stalactites and stalagmites.

Guilin has a subtropical monsoon climate, meaning it is hot and humid most of the year. The best time to visit is between April and October, when the weather is mild and pleasant. The city is also home to a diverse population, including several ethnic minorities such as the Zhuang, Hui, Yao and Dong. This diversity is reflected in the city’s traditions, festivals and culinary specialties, making Guilin an interesting destination for travelers looking to combine China’s natural beauty with a regional cultural richness.
