City Map

City Introduction

Jackson is the largest city and the capital of the US state of Mississippi. The city was founded in 1821 and named after General Andrew Jackson, who later became President of the United States. Until then, Natchez had been capital of Mississippi, but a more centrally located location was desired. Therefore, Thomas Hinds, James Patton and William Lattimore were sent out to find the right place, and they chose the trading post of LeFleur’s Bluff.

Architect Peter van Dorn designed a city plan for Jackson, and his work with streets like a checkerboard was inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s recommendations. The city developed and the railroad arrived in 1840, but during the American Civil War in the 1860s, large parts of Jackson were destroyed, and it had to be rebuilt. Growth quickly returned, and the population doubled from just over 4,000 in 1870 to around 8,000 in 1900.

Today you can take some nice walks in Jackson’s downtown, where there are several sights and attractions. You can start with a stroll along Capitol Street, where some of the city’s most famous places are located. You can see the beautiful Governor’s Mansion, which was built in 1841 and is one of the oldest governor’s residences in the United States. Tours of the house are organized so that you can get an impression of the work of the architect William Nichols.

Opposite the Governor’s Mansion to the south stands Jackson’s most characteristic high-rise, the Lamar Life Building, which was completed in 1924 as the city’s first skyscraper. Next to it is St. Andrew’s Cathedral, built in neo-Gothic style in 1903, and on the opposite side of the Governor’s Mansion is the Catholic Cathedral of St. Peter from the year 1900. One street west of St. Peter’s is the Old Greyhound Bus Station, which is a fine example of streamline moderne style from 1938.

A few blocks to the southeast, you can see Jackson’s City Hall, built in neoclassical style around 1850, and next door to the city hall is the Hinds County Courthouse from 1930 in Art Deco architecture. Jackson is the capital of Mississippi, and therefore you can see the state government building as well, which is located north of downtown Jackson. The Mississippi State Capitol is an impressive 1901-1903 neoclassical and beaux-arts style building that replaced the state’s former Capitol, which is in Jackson as well.

It was Theodore C. Link of St. Louis, who designed the Capitol building from, which is decorated inside with a very beautiful interior in the central rotunda under the beautiful dome. Originally, the legislative, executive and judicial powers were all located in the Capitol, but today only the Mississippi Legislature is in the Capitol. North of the building you can see the State Supreme Court in a separate building.

At the intersection of Capitol Street and Congress Street, you have a fine view of the Mississippi State Capitol and of the former government building, the Old Mississippi State Capitol, located at the eastern end of Capitol Street. The building was built in 1839 in Greek temple style and was the seat of the state government until 1903.

Among the many events that have taken place in the old Capitol was Mississippi’s secession from the United States in 1861. Today, you can visit The Old Capitol Museum in the old government building, and during a visit here you can explore the fine rooms and halls of the building, such as the Senate and rooms with representative purposes. You can also learn about the many decisions and events that made history in the former Capitol.

There are also quite a few museums in Jackson. In the southern part of the city center is the Mississippi Museum of Art, which is the state’s largest art museum. Here you can see works by both local, American and international artists. Next to the art museum is the concert venue Thalia Mara Hall and the Russell C Davis Planetarium.

To the northeast of the city, you can visit the Museum of Mississippi History, which tells the story of the state in the exhibition, which is divided chronologically from the first peoples to the present. In the same complex is the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, which not least tells the story of the fight for civil rights.
