City Introduction

Jefferson City is the capital of the state of Missouri. It is a city with an interesting history and a location on the northern edge of the Ozark Plateau on the southern side of the Missouri River. In the late 17th century, frontiersmen like Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, Louis Jolliet, Jacques Marquette, Robert de LaSalle, and Daniel Boone started to inhabit the area. However, the Missouri Territory was not organized before 1812 and nine years later Missouri was admitted as a state in the United States. Jefferson City was established in 1821, the same year as the statehood.

The Missouri State Capitol was located in St. Louis in the beginning, and soon after moved to St. Charles. In 1825, it was decided to move the capital again to a central location along the Missouri River, and Jefferson City has been the official state capital since 1826. The small village was originally called Lohman’s Landing, before settling on the name Jefferson in honor of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. The city was planned and laid out by Daniel Morgan Boone, the son of the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone.

The most iconic landmark in Jefferson City is the Missouri State Capitol. The present state capitol was completed in 1917, and it is the third capitol building in Jefferson City. Egerton Swartwout and Evarts Tracy designed the building with historical references to constructions in Washington D.C. The grand building in Jefferson City features a stunning dome that rises majestically above the city. You can visit the Missouri State Capital and enjoy the architecture, adorned with murals and sculptures. The Missouri State Museum is located in the state Capitol with exhibits portraying the state’s natural and cultural history.

Missouri State Capitol stand majestically along the Missouri River near the interesting Jefferson Landing State Historic Site. It is the place of the Missouri Landing, where James A. Crump built what is now known as the Lohman Building in 1839. It was a grocery store, warehouse, tavern, telegraph office and hotel for the growing capital city. From the 1850s after the arrival of the railroad, goods came by rail from the east and was shipped on the river from the landing to the west. You can visit the historic buildings at the landing, where there is a Lewis and Clark Monument as well.

Next to the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site you will find the Missouri Governor’s Mansion. It was built in 1871 as an elegant residence of the Missouri. The architecture is a fine example of Second Empire, and the mansion is open for guided tours with stories of the building and the governors residing here. There are more history across the street from the mansion, where you can visit Cole County Historical Museum. The museum provides local history with various exhibitions about native Americans, the Civil War and more.

Jefferson City is a place with a cozy small-town atmosphere, and it is easy to explore the city’s architectural heritage in the historic downtown. The epicenter of downtown is the intersection of High Street and Madison Street, and 19th century buildings are lined up along High Street. Besides enjoying the streetscape you can visit the Missouri State Penitentiary, which operated from 1836 to 2004. It is today an museum telling the story of the place and the inmates. There are also other impressive buildings like the First United Methodist Church and Cole County Circuit Court.

Kansas City

Kansas City is the largest city in the state of Missouri, and it is a city located at the mouth of the Kansas River flow into the Missouri River. Already during the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition after the American purchase of French Louisiana in 1803, it was determined that the place was well suited for a fort. It took until 1831 before a group of Mormons led by Joseph Smith settled here, but they had to move on two years later.

In the following years, settlements appeared in Independence, Westport and along the Missouri River, and in 1850 the Town of Kansas formally became a city, with a location along the river in the northern part of the modern downtown. In the last decades of the 19th century, the city boomed due to the railroad, and in 1889 it was named Kansas City. In the year 1900, a good 163,000 inhabitants lived here.
