City Introduction

Jelenia Góra is a city with a rich history, located in the Polish part of historic Silesia. Its history dates back to the 10th century, but it developed rapidly after gaining town rights in 1288. The city was strategically located on the trade routes between Bohemia and areas to the northeast.

There is a lot to see in Jelenia Góra, where city life not least takes place in the cozy streets around the central market square, where the town hall is located. You can also see some beautiful churches such as the Garrison Church and enjoy the view of the center and the surrounding area from the top of the Baszta Zamkowa tower.

Jelenia Góra has grown together with the town of Cieplice, where you can also enjoy a cozy town and see some sights. These include the Pałac Schaffgotschów Palace, the spa park named Park Zdrojowy Cieplicach Śląskich-Zdroju and the popular thermal baths in the Termy Cieplickie resort.

The area around Jelenia Góra offers beautiful nature. The highlight is Mount Śnieżka, which towers over the landscape at 1,603 meters/5,259 feet. You can walk to the fabulous views of the summit, and in the Karkonosze Mountains there are also hiking trails and ski areas. You can also visit the Czech Republic close by.

The Market Square (Town Hall Square)
Rynek (Plac Ratuszowy)

Rynek is the name of Jelenia Gora’s central square, and here there is a lovely atmosphere with interesting buildings, cafes and restaurants. The square is surrounded by gabled houses from the Baroque era. It was merchants and other leading citizens of the city who lived here and who used the rooms under the arcades, which can be seen in all the houses.

Today there is no traffic on the square, but in the years 1897-1969 trams ran in Jelenia Gora and thus also here. You can see a preserved wagon on the market square, and it is today set up as a souvenir kiosk.

In the middle of the square is Jelenia Gora’s beautiful town hall, Ratusz, which you can also see in quite a few other similar squares in Polish cities. The town hall was built in the years 1744-1749, and in front of the town hall is the Neptunspringvandet/Fontanna Neptuna.

Ratusz

Ratusz is the town hall of Jelenia Gora, and it is located as the center of the town on the central market square Rynek. The beautiful building was built in the years 1744-1749 on the remains of former town halls from the Gothic and Renaissance periods. In the early 1900s, the town hall administration was expanded with the purchase of the so-called seven houses next to the town hall building itself.

At that time, a tram ran across the two building complexes, and therefore the two parts were connected with the arcade at the height of the first floor, which can still be seen. There are several things worth seeing in the town hall, where you can see, among other things, fine sculptures by Ernst Rülke.

Sanktuarium Krzyża Świętego

Sanktuarium Krzyża Świętego is a large church, also called the Garrison Church/Kościół Garnizonowy. The church was built in the years 1709-1817 for the Protestant congregation in the city and in Silesia. Following an agreement with the Catholic Austrian government, the Protestants had to build six churches in the region.

The church was designed as a cross with triforia on several floors, so that there could be about 2,000 churchgoers in the large building. The interior is beautiful with a fine altar. Around the church there used to be a cemetery, but today it is almost a park, where there are statues and a marking of the city’s geographical center.

Basilica of St. Erazma in Pankracego is a church built in the 14th-15th centuries and dedicated to the patron saints of Jelenia Gora. The church is Gothic, but later extensions and decorations come from the Renaissance and Baroque.

The church is the main Catholic church in Jelenia Gora. It stands as a typical example of a Gothic church, but where, for example, the tower originates from the Renaissance with a Baroque dome. In the church room you can see, among other things, a beautiful altar from the 18th century, and there are side altars from the same period.

 

The Neptune Fountain
Fontanna Neptuna

Fontanna Neptuna is a fountain that stands in front of Jelenia Gora’s Town Hall in the central market square. It is a beautiful fountain that was built in the same place where the city’s well used to be.

The fountain shows the sea god Neptune. Jelenia Gora is not located by the sea, but Neptune in this case symbolizes the town’s historical trade with other countries. The fountain was installed here in the 19th century.

 

The Castle Tower

Baszta Zamkowa is a castle tower located in the center of Jelenia Gora on the site of a city gate and a castle. The tower was built in 1584 and, among other things, functioned as a prison.

Today, the tower is the only preserved part of the old city gate, and there is access to the top, from where there is a beautiful panoramic view of the city center and the mountains to the south.

Kaplica św. Anny

Kaplica św. Anny is a church in Jelenia Gora that was built in the years 1709-1715. It was the architect Kasper Jentsch who designed the church, which was not the first on the site.

In the 15th century, a fortified house was built on this site as part of the Wojanowska city gate. In 1514, the house was rebuilt and on that occasion also had a function as a chapel. However, the old church burned down in 1634 in connection with the Thirty Years’ War.

 

Wojanowska Tower
Baszta Wojanowska

Baszta Wojanowska is a tower that was built as part of the fortification around the Wajanowska city gate, which stood on the road to Wojanów. The tower also had a function as a prison.

The tower collapsed in 1480 and was quickly rebuilt as the tower you can see today. The old city gate on the site was demolished in 1775 and replaced by a smaller baroque gate. You can see part of it next to the tower.

Cerkiew Apostołów Piotra in Pawła is a church that was built in 1737-1738 according to the design of the architect Kasper Jentsch. It happened after the destruction of the previous church on the site during the Thirty Years’ War. The church was built on the foundations of the destroyed church, which is known to have been mentioned from 1453.

The building was Roman Catholic until 1925, and it became Orthodox after World War II. Icons and the iconostasis came here from the Lublin region, where some Orthodox churches had been destroyed during the war. You can also see some newer frescoes in the interior.

 

Cyprian Norwid Theater

Teatr Cypriana Norwida is a theater building located a little southeast of the center of Jelenia Gora. The scene’s history goes back to the decades around 1900, when Jelenia Gora had grown to be an important industrial town, where the citizens had a rich cultural life.

However, the city lacked a large theater, and after donations, this large art nouveau theater was built in 1903-1904. This happened with room for 700 guests in the auditorium and a number of other facilities, a restaurant and a beer room.

 

Karkonosze Museum
Muzeum Karkonoskie

Muzeum Karkonoskie is a regional museum for Jelenia Gora and its surroundings. The town is located north of the Karkonosze mountain range, also known in German as the Giant Mountains, and the name of the museum comes from the Polish name.

At Muzeum Karkonoskie you can learn about the cultural history of Jelenia Gora and the region through exciting exhibitions. Among other things, you can see a typical house from the area and a collection of the glass crafts for which the region is known.

Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój

Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój is a small town located as a suburb of Jelenia Góra. In the suburbs you can take a walk along a beautiful promenade and see the castle of the Schaffgotsch family, Pałac Schaffgotschów. The castle was built 1784-1788, and together with Cieplice’s spa park, it forms a beautiful ensemble.

In Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój you can also enjoy the town’s hot spring water, which comes up with a temperature of around 90 degrees. The town was formerly known as the German Bad Warmbrunn, and the spa park Park Zdrojowy was built at the springs. Today you can enjoy the warm water in the Termy Cieplickie thermal bath, where the water is of course cooled to suitable temperatures.

 

Karpacz

Karpacz is one of the cozy towns at the foot of the Karkonosze mountain range, and the mountains in particular offer many opportunities for lovely walks in and around Karpacz. Many choose the trip to the top of Mount Śnieżka, but there are also other parks, forests and waterfalls to experience.

Karpacz is also a spa town and a ski resort. There are opportunities for swimming in the area and also skiing during the season. You can also take a walk in the city itself and see Vang Stavkirke/Świątynia Wang, which is one of the city’s most visited places. The stave church dates from the 13th century and originally stood in Vang, Norway, because it was bought by the King of Prussia and rebuilt in Karpacz in 1842.

 

Śnieżka

Śnieżka is a characteristic mountain that sits as the peak of the Karkonosze mountain range that forms the border between Poland and the Czech Republic. You can see Śnieżka from a long distance, which at 1,603 meters is the highest point of the chain, and which rises significantly in the landscape above all other parts of the Karkonosze.

The mountain is called Śnieżka in Polish and Sněžka in Czech, and it is the highest point of the Czech Republic. It is also a mountain that is easy to climb.
