City Introduction

Klagenfurt is a city in southern Austria. The city is the capital of the state of Carinthia and is beautifully situated in the landscape along the river Glan by the lake Wörthersee and the eastern Alps. Klagenfurt is known from the 12th century, but it is considered to have been founded in 1246, when Duke Bernhard von Spanheim moved the city to its current position, and six years later it obtained city rights. In the 16th century, Klagenfurt had to be rebuilt after a fire, and it was based on the Italian Renaissance with right-angled streets and the center on Neuer Platz.

Today, Alter Platz and Neuer Platz are the central squares. Alter Platz was the city center from 1246, and here you can see the old town hall, Altes Rathaus, which was built as a residence in the 17th century to become the town hall in the years 1737-1918. Opposite the Altes Rathaus you can see the city’s plague column from 1680. In the southwest corner of the square, you can see the beautiful mansion, Palais Göess, which was created in 1738 by joining two houses with a new facade.

From Alter Platz it is only a short walk to the Renaissance square Neuer Platz, where the city hall is located to the west in the old 17th-century residence of Johann Andreas von Rosenberg, which was remodeled in classicism at the beginning of the 19th century. Northwest of Neuer Platz is the impressive Landhaus Klagenfurt from 1574-1594, which today is the seat of the Landtag or parliament in Carinthia. Opposite the Landhaus is the Church of the Holy Spirit from the 17th century, which was built as part of a monastery.

In the southern part of Klagenfurt’s center, you can visit the city’s cathedral. It was initially built by Protestants in 1581 as the largest Protestant church in Austria. In connection with the subsequent Counter-Reformation, the church was given to Catholic Jesuits, who had to rebuild the church at the beginning of the 18th century after a fire. When you enter the church, a particularly beautiful interior opens up in the lavish baroque decoration with several side chapels, paintings and a fine high altar.
