City Introduction

Larisa is the capital of the region of Thessaly and it is one of Greece’s largest cities. The area has been inhabited for millennia, and according to tradition, Hippocrates died in the city. Larisa was a Greek city-state in antiquity, and then followed a Hellenistic and a Roman period. Later, Thessaly was conquered by the Muslim Ottomans, before Larisa became part of the independent Greek kingdom in 1881, and in more recent times the city grew significantly into today’s modern metropolis.

The Kentrikí Plateía square forms the modern center of Larisa, and from here you can walk along the city’s well-known narrow streets, such as the Kouma pedestrian street. You can also walk a few streets northwest to the large church, Agios Achillios, the latest of a series of churches that have all been dedicated to Achilleus. He was bishop of Larisa, and he participated in the first Council of Nicaea in the year 325, where bishops from the whole Christian Church were gathered. Agios Achillios is a beautiful church which, as the latest in the series, was consecrated in 1965.

Close to this is Larisa’s old acropolis, Lofos Frouriou, which means Fortress Hill. The hill was Larisa’s citadel in antiquity and in Byzantine times. On the hill, you can still see ruins of, among other things, the city’s first basilica to Achilleus, a Byzantine bath and, not least, Larisa’s famous theater. The theater was built in the 2nd century BC and could hold 10,000 spectators. The large frames were used until about the year 300, and it is today Larisa’s landmark.

In Larisa you can also go for some lovely walks in the city’s large parks, which lie along the Pineios river. The largest and best known is Alkazar Park, which was used for horse shows from 1887-1937 and then as a zoo until 1990. There are beautiful green spaces here, and in the middle of the park you can see the Monument for the National Resistance. Immediately to the west of the park, you can see the Hippocrates monument, located by the Greek physician’s tomb, which was found in 1826.

The city is the main city in the northern part of the country and one of the political, economic and cultural centers. Cultural life flourishes in the metropolis, which has over a million inhabitants.

It was Cassander of Macedonia who founded Thessaloniki in 315 BC, and he named the new city after his wife, Thessalonica, who was Alexander the Great’s sister. After its foundation, the city grew into an important city in the Roman Empire, and it was one of the most prosperous cities of the Byzantine Empire.
