Hoover Dam, named after former US President Herbert Hoover, is a masterpiece of engineering. It measures 221 meters in height. The thickness is 200 meters at the foot and 15 meters at the top. The 185 km long Lake Mead with its colossal amount of freshwater, was filled after completion of the dam.

For the construction, four tunnels were blasted into the mountainsides, through which the water of the Colorado River could flow. Then the loose parts of the rock walls were blasted away and the dam built from the bottom of the gorge. The style is period-typical in art deco.

You can walk or drive over the dam, which connects the states of Arizona and Nevada. From the top there is a beautiful view in both directions. City History

The Spanish Beginning

After the Spanish creation of missions in the Los Angeles area, they sought an access route to the area of present-day Las Vegas through what later became the state of Nevada. The first European was Rafael Rivera, who saw a large grassy valley in front of him. He named the area Las Vegas meaning the meadows.

In 1844, explorer Militant John Charles Frémont writes about Las Vegas, making the place known to more than the few passing Spaniards and the Native Americans. It resulted 11 years later in the founding of the Mormons of a fort in Las Vegas. Two years after its construction in 1855, the fort was abandoned.

The beginning of a city

Scattered settlements were built throughout the latter half of the 1800s, when Nevada developed primarily due to the many opportunities for mining. Gold, silver and minerals had been discovered and this led to increasing immigration. During this time, cheap land was allotted to immigrants, and this brought especially many farmers to Las Vegas.

However, it was the construction of the railway between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles in 1902 that became decisive for the city’s continued growth and development. Las Vegas became a stop on the course due to natural springs that could provide water for the course, and thus the city became an important stop on the route that grew.

Modest growth and the first games

In connection with the railway, land was tendered in 1905 in an area that formed an actual town. Thereby the city of Las Vegas was founded, and it happened a little south of the Mormons’ old fort and in the area that is still downtown Las Vegas today. During the first decades, the population reached a few thousand people.

Las Vegas and Nevada, like many other places, were characterized by illegal gambling, and the problem was solved here by allowing it and issuing licenses to six establishments in the first place. However, gambling was banned in 1910, only to be allowed again from 1931.

Immigration and divorce laws were also relaxed considerably. After only six weeks of settlement, a divorce could be obtained. This led to a need for many short stays in the city, which was really the first step towards the hotel and entertainment industry seen today. In 1930, the number of citizens had reached 5,165.

Hoover Dam construction

In 1931, construction began on the colossal Hoover Dam near Las Vegas. The large-scale construction work provided fertile ground for a flourishing in the city, and the construction also stimulated the population, which then increased slowly but surely. The town of Boulder City was built to house the workers at the dam, but many of them found Las Vegas’ entertainment at, among other things, the gambling tables.

In 1940, there were just over 8,000 people in Las Vegas, and from here the number has increased dramatically. After a major expansion and a simultaneous expansion of Las Vegas’ old city zone, the number rose to 48,000 in 1950. From a fledgling beginning in the 1940s, one hotel after another shot up over the following decades. There was growth and prosperity in the United States, and this could be felt in the entertainment industry that characterized Las Vegas.

The hotels were centered around easily accessible experiences in their large casinos. In addition, they offered the biggest daily shows, where a star like Elvis Presley performed in 1969. In the 1960s, Howard Hughes started a significant shift in the city from traditional casinos to wider entertainment at the hotels.

The booming city

In 1970, 270,000 people lived in Las Vegas, and just ten years later this number had grown to 467,000. However, it was not to end there, because in the 1980s the focus was on a significant expansion of the number.

In the period 1985-1995, annual growth was seven percent, and a building boom that had not been seen before was once again initiated. Large hotels on the strip and activities that the city’s monorail came to. During the period, Las Vegas grew into a million city, and hotels with casinos sprang up along Las Vegas Boulevard, and the time was marked by new colossal hotel complexes.

Today’s Las Vegas

Nevada’s favorable position with a near monopoly on gambling was broken when Indians were allowed to operate casinos on their reservations. It could remove part of Las Vegas’ tourist flow from the city and thus a large source of income and a large number of jobs. The answer to the challenge was a change of Las Vegas from a position as a center of casino tourism to an experience tourism.

Large hotel complexes of a unique nature in the world were built on themes such as Paris, Venice and historical Egypt. The Eiffel Tower, sphinxes and Roman halls were built, as well as a number of activities for both children and adults. You could now go to Las Vegas for much more than just gambling, and the tourists came in numbers never seen before.

The constant and colossal tourist flow also brought with it an ordinary urban development. Art museums, universities, and large corporations are also located in Las Vegas, which for years has been the United States’ fastest-growing metropolis. There are now up to two million people in the Las Vegas area, who in less than 100 years have become the absolute center of Nevada and much more than the green meadows Rafael Rivera passed on his way to Los Angeles in the 1800s.

Today, the city is a modern millionaire, world-renowned for its 24-hour tourist attractions along the main strip The Strip with all the sparkling neon signs and large hotel complexes.

This is where it began, and it remains an experience that does not find its way in the world. Las Vegas creates dreams and provides entertainment in true American manners.

Other signs have been put up as replicas in and around Las Vegas, but only the one at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard is the original, and a parking lot has been created by the sign so visitors can take pictures of the landmark.

Heart Attack Grill

Las Vegas is known for many things, and one of them is the city’s buffets and other gastronomy. Las Vegas is also an entertainment city, and the Heart Attack Grill restaurant is a good example of a combination of the two things.

At the restaurant, the theme is a hospital, where nurses take orders from customers who are patients. On the menu there are hamburgers in varying sizes to the colossal ones with names like Quadruple Bypass Hamburgers.

Heart Attack Grill is entertaining and has got a name for its theme and the food with a lot of calories. With campaigns such as people over 350 pounds/160 kilos eating for free, and being wheeled to your car if you can eat one of the large hamburgers, have made the place even more talked about.

Las Vegas Natural History Museum

Las Vegas Natural History Museum tells stories of natural sciences in an interesting  way. From prehistoric times you can see the dinosaur gallery with the 10-metre-long fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex.

At the museum in the desert city, you can also see a large aquarium with sharks and rays, and there are also models of large sharks. Of other animals, there are stuffed animals or models thereof from all over the world’s continents. You experience Africa’s savannah, the Arctic and Nevada’s own nature. Finally, there is also a collection of animals in terrariums such as snakes and tarantulas.

In addition to these themes, you can also see other things depicted from different parts of history. Most famous is probably the museum’s Egyptian exhibition, which focuses on the life of Tutankhamun.
