City Introduction

Lijiang is a city in Yunnan Province in southwestern China. Founded during the Song Dynasty in the late 13th century, the city historically developed without city walls, which was unusual for Chinese cities of that period. This peculiarity was due to a local superstition that a city wall would bring bad luck to the Mu family, who ruled the area. Over time, Lijiang grew, and today the city’s architecture and urban planning reflect a unique blend of Han Chinese and Naxi culture, making Lijiang an exciting and different place.

In 1997, Lijiang’s Old Town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its well-preserved traditional architecture and complex water supply system. The city has undergone several restorations to preserve its historic atmosphere. This is clearly evident when visiting Lijiang, as these efforts have allowed visitors to experience the city’s rich history in the best possible way. Lijiang is also known for its scenic location at the foot of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, which provides the city with a spectacular backdrop and makes it a popular destination for both nature and its old town.

Dayan/大研, better known as Lijiang Old Town or Dayan Old Town, is the most famous attraction in Lijiang. Dayan is the essence of the historical atmosphere of Lijiang, and this old town is known for its narrow, cobblestone streets, traditional wooden houses and charming canals. Canal systems are a distinctive feature of Lijiang, and were constructed during the Song Dynasty. The system consists of three main canals and many smaller canals that run through the city, connecting the different neighborhoods. The canals are known for their clear water and beautiful stone bridges, and the complex water supply system has played a crucial role in the development of the city. Simply stroll through the winding streets and enjoy the atmosphere and Dayan’s many small shops, cafes and restaurants.

One of the most notable buildings in Lijiang Old Town is the Mu Family Residence. This magnificent building was originally built during the Yuan Dynasty and was later expanded and renovated during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Mu Family was a powerful Naxi clan that ruled Lijiang for centuries, and their residence reflects their wealth and influence. The architecture of the Mu Family Residence is a blend of Han Chinese and Naxi styles, featuring beautifully carved woodwork, detailed brick patterns, and traditional Chinese gardens. A visit here will allow you to explore the residence complex’s many halls, courtyards, and pavilions, and gain an insight into the lives of Lijiang’s ruling elite in the past.

Another notable building in Lijiang Old Town is the Wangu Pavilion/万古楼, located atop Lion Hill in central Lijiang. Originally built during the Ming Dynasty, the Wangu Pavilion is known for its impressive and elegant architecture. The pavilion is 33 meters high and consists of five floors, each decorated with colorful paintings and carvings that reflect the heritage of the Naxi culture. You can visit the pavilion and enjoy the panoramic view of Lijiang Old Town from the top. From here, you can also see the surrounding nature such as Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and lush valleys.

Black Dragon Pool Park/黑龍潭 is another popular excursion destination in Lijiang. It is a beautiful park, known for its clear lake, traditional pavilions and stunning views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. On a tour of the park, you can take a walk around the lake and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. You can also visit Longshen Temple/龙神寺 from 1737, also known as the Dragon God Temple. The temple is dedicated to the local dragon god and is known for its beautiful architecture. The park also houses the Museum of Naxi Dongba Culture/麗江東巴文化博物館東巴文化傳習院, which provides an insight into the traditional lifestyle and religion of the Naxi people. In addition, you can see the tower Wufeng Lu/五凤楼, originally built during the Ming Dynasty and later moved to the park.

Day Trips

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
玉龍雪山

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is a mountain range located in the area north of Lijiang. The mountain has 13 peaks, the highest of which, Shanzidou, reaches an altitude of 5,596 meters, and the mountain contains, among other things, the southernmost glacier in the northern hemisphere. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain can be seen from Lijiang, and the mountain thus serves as a beautiful backdrop to the city. This view is especially breathtaking from the Black Dragon Pool/黑龍潭.

It is worth going to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and enjoying nature. Visitors can take a cable car up to the higher levels of the mountain and enjoy breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks and surrounding valleys from an observation deck at an altitude of 4,506 meters. There is also an observation point at 4,680 meters, from which there are beautiful views of the snow-capped mountains. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is also a popular spot for hiking in the impressive scenery and for skiing in season, and it is home to many rare plants and animals.

Tiger Leaping Gorge
虎跳峡

One of the deepest gorges in the world, Tiger Leaping Gorge is set in stunning natural beauty, making a trip here a must-see attraction when visiting Lijiang. Formed by the Jinsha River, a tributary of the Yangtze River, the gorge stretches for 15 kilometers with a maximum depth of 3,790 meters. The gorge is located in the same area as the impressive Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

There are great opportunities to hike along the gorge’s trails and enjoy spectacular views of the steep rock walls and rushing river. Tiger Leaping Gorge is also known for its many waterfalls and lush vegetation, making it a paradise for nature lovers. And there are several different places to choose from along the river and gorge. According to legend, a tiger jumped over the river at Tiger Leaping Rock to escape a hunter. It is an iconic site in the gorge and a popular photo spot.

The Upper Gorge is the narrowest part of the gorge and is known for its rushing currents and steep landscapes. It is easily accessible and perfect for a short hike. Here you can see the famous tiger statue and hear the roaring waters of the Jinsha River. The Middle Gorge area is popular with hikers and offers spectacular views of the gorge and surrounding mountains. A hiking trail runs from Naxi Family Guesthouse to Tina’s Guesthouse, passing the famous 28 Bends along the way.

Baisha Village
白沙村

Baisha Village is a village located about five miles north of Lijiang. A walk through the town is a great way to experience Lijiang’s rich history and culture, and it is a quieter contrast to Lijiang and Shuhe Ancient Town. The village is known for its well-preserved murals dating back to the Ming Dynasty. Visitors can explore the village’s narrow streets and traditional houses and get a glimpse of life in ancient China. Baisha Village is also home to several temples and shrines where you can learn about the religious practices and traditions of the Naxi people, making a visit here a glimpse into local history.

Baisha Village grew up as a Naxi settlement and was the birthplace of local governors from the Mu family. It was the political, economic and cultural center of Lijiang before the Ming Dynasty, which ruled from 1368 to 1644. The establishment of Baisha Village began as early as the Tang Dynasty, from 618 to 907, and the village flourished during the Song Dynasty from 960 to 1279 and the Yuan Dynasty from 1271 to 1368. From the Ming Dynasty, the governors moved their families to Dayan, which is the current old part of Lijiang, but they still built temples in Baisha Village, making this village a religious center during the early Ming Dynasty. The existing Dabaoji, Liuli, and Wenchang palaces and the famous Baisha murals were completed during that period.
