Linz is a city in northern Austria, beautifully situated on the banks of the Danube. It is the country’s third largest city, and it dates to the foundation by the Romans. Linz quickly became an active trade city, and it temporarily became the kingdom’s most important city when Emperor Friedrich III resided his last years here. Over the centuries, Linz grew, for which big plans were launched with Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. Hitler regarded Linz as his hometown, and it was supposed to be a leading city for art and culture, which was however not realized.
In Linz, the square Hauptplatz forms the center of the city. It is a square with many elegant houses, and here you can see the city’s old town hall, and in front of the town hall stands the Trinity Column, which was erected 1717-1723 as a plague column in gratitude for overcoming an epidemic. From the Hauptplatz, you can take a walk along the street Hofgasse, which leads to a lovely area with narrow streets and small squares. It is also in this area that you can get to Linz’s old residence castle.
The castle of Linzer Schloss stands high above the river Danube, and from the terrace behind the castle there is a great view. A Roman fortress used to be located on this site. The old castle was rebuilt into a castle in 1477, and from this time you can e.g. see the gate Friedrichstor. The current castle was built at the beginning of the 17th century, and today it is open as a historical and ethnographic museum. Close to the castle, you can visit the Martinskirche church, whose history dates to 799. Today’s Martinskirche is newer, and it has a beautiful interior.
There are many other major sights and attractions in the city. The Linzer Mariendom Cathedral was built in neo-Gothic style in the years 1862-1924, and it is Austria’s largest church. Another large building is the Linzer Landhaus, which was built between 1568 and 1658 as an extension of a former monastery. The Landhaus is the seat of the Landtag in the state of Upper Austria. In the center you can also see Austria’s largest theater, the Landestheater Linz, which was opened in the early 19th century. A little south from here you can see the modern Musiktheater Linz.
