City Introduction

Lourdes is a city located in the French part of the Pyrenees and it is part of the Hautes-Pyrénées department. The place has been inhabited since Roman times, when a castle and fortifications were established here. Over the centuries, Lourdes played a minor role, and in the middle of the 19th century, approximately 4,000 people lived in the town, whose development really took off in 1858.

That year, 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous reported on February 11 that a beautiful woman had appeared to her in the Grotto of Massabielle. The woman identified herself as the Immaculate Conception and thereby the Virgin Mary, who appeared a total of 18 times. The apparitions caused pilgrims to flock to Lourdes, and in 1864 a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes was put up in the grotto where the events had taken place. Since then, Lourdes has been well visited and the city has hosted several papal visits.

Today, the pilgrimage site is Lourdes’ biggest attraction. The place is called the Sanctuaire de Notre-Dame de Lourdes and is an area that marks the events surrounding the Massabielle grotto in 1858. Many come to the town to experience the grotto and see the statue of the Virgin Mary that stands here. In the cave there is also a spring with Lourdes water, which is said to have healing effects.

There are three basilicas in the area by the cave. The Basilique de Notre-Dame de l’Immaculée-Conception de Lourdes, also known as the upper church, was built between 1862 and 1871 and stands as the oldest of the basilicas. Notre Dame du Rosaire de Lourdes was consecrated in the Byzantine style in 1901, while the Basilique Saint Pius X is somewhat more recent. The Basilique Saint Pie X was consecrated in 1958 and is the largest of the basilicas. It was built underground to house 25,000 pilgrims for the centenary of the apparitions in Lourdes.

You can also see Château Fort de Lourdes, which is the city’s old castle, strategically located as a fortress at the entrance to several valleys. Château Fort has over time been the residence of counts and was also used as a prison before a museum for the Pyrenees was established here in the early 1900s. The castle is beautifully situated above Lourdes and the surrounding terrain, and there is a fine view from here. It is also interesting to visit the castle museum, where you can take a closer look at the castle’s interior and history.

Pau, France

Pau

Pau is a city located in southwestern France close to the border with Spain. Pau is in the Béarn area, which from 1464 was an independent principality with Pau as its capital. However, the city is known from sources as early as the 12th century, when the city arose at a castle that was built at a strategically important ford. It was Béarn’s then viscount who built the castle. After gaining the status of capital in 1464, Pau became the seat of Pamplona’s kings in 1512. It got this status when Castile conquered Pamplona, whereby the monarchs moved to the area north of the Pyrenees.

Toulouse, France

Toulouse

Toulouse with the beautiful Capitole is the center of the charming metropolis, which is located on the banks of the River Garonne. Beautiful, red brick buildings, large churches, museums and the Garonne bridges are great sights to see in the city. It is worth visiting it to experience both culture and history.

Toulouse’s waterways are interesting. The city is located in the Midi area between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and the Canal du Midi canal starts from the river Garonne right here on its way towards the Mediterranean. The shoreline on the banks provides beautiful walks through large parts of Toulouse, and along the Garonne itself the stroll is also very nice as well.
