City Introduction

Lucknow is the capital of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is a city with an interesting history that dates back to the 16th century, when the city was conquered by Bābur, the first Mughal ruler of India. Under Babur’s grandson, Akbar, Lucknow became part of the Oudh province, but it remained a provincial city. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the city slowly developed and became known for its rich culture and architecture. In 1775, Āṣaf al-Dawlah, the Nawab of Oudh, moved his capital from Faizabad to Lucknow, marking the beginning of the city’s heyday. The Nawabs, known for their luxurious lifestyle and love of art and culture, made Lucknow a thriving center for music, dance, poetry, and culinary traditions.

During the rule of the Nawabs, many impressive buildings and monuments were built, including the Bara Imambara, the Chota Imambara, and the Rumi Darwaza, which are still important landmarks in the city today. The Nawabs also invited artists and craftsmen from all over India and Persia to settle in Lucknow, further enriching the city’s cultural landscape. In 1856, Lucknow became part of British India, and during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, British forces had to besiege the city before it was recaptured by the colonial power after several months of fighting. This period was marked by great unrest and destruction, but also by heroic resistance from the city’s inhabitants. Lucknow has since developed into a modern metropolis with a unique blend of ancient and modern culture.

The city center of Lucknow is a lively area with a lot of activity and several attractions. One of the most iconic places in the modern city is Hazratganj, which is the center of many markets, shops, restaurants and offices. Here you can take a relaxing walk and enjoy the daily life of the city. The history of the market area began in 1827 with the founding of the place by Nawab Nasir-ud-Din Haidar Shah, where goods from Europe and China were offered, among others. In 1842 it was named Hazratganj after Nawab Amjad Ali Shah, who was also nicknamed Hazrat. There are also other markets in the city such as Aminabad and in the area around Charbagh Railway Station.

Bara Imambara is the name of one of the most important historical attractions in Lucknow. It is a building complex that was built in the 1780s by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, and it is known for its impressive architecture from the Mughal era. The complex includes a mosque, lush courtyards and the large central hall, which has an extensive wooden roof supported by 260 pillars. Inside there are fine halls, the main ones being the Chinese Hall, Persian Hall and Kharbooza Hall, and in the center you can see the tomb of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula. It is also in Bara Imambara that you will find the fascinating labyrinthine Bhool Bhulaiya, which is said to have hundreds of ways in, but only one way out of the building.

A little northwest of Bara Imambara, you can visit another beautiful building complex in the form of Chota Imambara, which was built by Muhammad Ali Shah in 1838 as an assembly hall for Shia Muslims. The building is an excellent example of Indo-Islamic architecture with Persian influence, and its white facade, golden dome and impressive minarets create a breathtaking aesthetic. Inside, Chota Imambara is known as the Palace of Lights due to the many chandeliers and mirrors that adorn the hall. The complex also includes several other attractions such as Satkhanda, which is an incomplete watchtower inspired by the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and Hussainabad Clock Tower, a Victorian-Gothic structure that contrasts with the otherwise Islamic architecture of Chota Imambara. You can also see the tombs of Nawab Muhammad Ali Shah and his family

When traveling around Lucknow, there are several attractions along the city’s central streets and neighborhoods. Rumi Darwaza or the Turkish Gate is a prominent gate built in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daula. The tall gate is an example of Awadhi architecture modeled after an ancient gate from Constantinople. Next to Rumi Darwaza is the Husainabad Clock Tower, built in 1881 during the British rule. Standing at a height of 67 metres, the clock tower is an important landmark in Lucknow and offers a magnificent view of the area.

Lucknow also has several important museums that offer an insight into the city’s rich culture and history. The Residency is a historical complex that played a central role in the 1857 uprising. It houses the 1857 Memorial Museum, which displays artifacts from the freedom struggle against the British colonial rule, including weapons, uniforms and documents. The name The Residency comes from the fact that the complex was the residence of the so-called British Resident General. You can also visit the State Museum, beautifully located in the Lucknow Zoo. It is a museum with an extensive collection of sculptures, bronzes, paintings and natural history specimens. If you are interested in astronomy, you can go to the Indira Gandhi Planetarium, which in addition to astronomy is known for its unique building that imitates the planet Saturn.

Overview of Lucknow

Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning Province in northeastern China. It was first known as Shenzhou during the Khitan Kingdom in the 10th century. It later became an important border city during the Liao Dynasty, which ruled from 907 to 1125. In the 17th century, Shenyang, then called Mukden, became the capital of the rising Manchu Empire under the leadership of General Nurhaci. Mukden served as a strategic base for the Manchu conquest of China and the establishment of the Qing Dynasty.
