City Introduction

Mae Sot is a border town located in western Thailand just a few kilometers from the border with Myanmar. The city is lively and characterized by the border trade that crosses the Moei River, which forms a natural land border.

The Mae Sot area is characterized by many ethnic groups, with the four dominant ones being Thais, Burmese, Chinese and the Karen people. In and around Mae Sot you can see many Burmese working in Thailand, and the women’s powdered cheeks and the men’s sarong trousers are among their characteristics.

The road to Myanmar runs along the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge, which was built in 1997, and it is precisely along the road to Myanmar that some of the city’s sights are located. You can also go on tours in the surroundings of Mae Sot, which is surrounded by mountainous landscapes with rushing rivers, beautiful waterfalls and other natural gems.

Top Attractions

Chumphon Khiri Temple
Wat Chumphon Khiri

Wat Chumphon Khiri is a temple that was built in the 19th century. Over time, the facility has been restored and rebuilt several times, and a chedi has been built, which was inspired by the Shwedagon chedi in Myanmar’s capital Yangon.

In addition to the large, gilded chedi, there are also other buildings in the temple that, with their rich decorations, are quite worth seeing.

Thai Wattanaram Temple
Wat Thai Wattanaram

Wat Thai Wattanaram is a temple complex located in the part of Mae Sot that is near the border bridge to Myanmar. In the temple you can see, among other things, a number of Buddha figures that were produced in Burmese style, such as a colossal reclining Buddha from 1993.

In the viharn of the temple complex, you can see an exhibition of Burmese musical instruments. Thereby, a visit to the site can give a taste of being in Myanmar, which is less than a kilometer from the temple.

Talat Rim Moei Border Market
ตลาดริมเมย

Talat Rim Moei is the name of a market located by the border bridge to Myanmar. As a border town, trade is naturally widespread in Mae Sot, and at the Rim Moei market, different population groups sell all kinds of goods.

The market is a good place if you want to buy some Burmese products, and the atmosphere alone gives you a taste of the neighboring country’s culture. There are of course also a number of local Thais who use the market and the area around it.

Day Trips

Pha Charoen Waterfall
Namtok Pha Charoen
น้ำตกพาเจริญ

Namtok Pha Charoen is a waterfall which is one of the spectacular natural experiences in the countryside around Mae Sot. There are as many as 97 small falls in the entire waterfall, which quite close to the main road almost spring out of nowhere in the jungle-like surroundings.

The waterfall is located in a national park with the same name as the fall. The park is 855 km2 in size and quite mountainous, and the park’s highest peak reaches a height of 1,765 metres. In addition to the Namtok Pha Charoen, there are other waterfalls, hot springs and a wealth of flora that is a feast for the eyes of any visitor.

The road that goes from Mae Sot to Namtok Pha Charoen and on to Um Phang is an experience in itself. Here there are hairpin bends and a hilly landscape that offers one vantage point after another. This is something you can look forward to on the trip and on the stretch between the cities of Mae Sot and Tak.

Highland Farm and Wildlife Refuge

Highland Farm and Wildlife Refuge is a refuge for not least gibbons, located approximately five kilometers south of the water surface Namtok Pha Charoen. It is a refuge for monkeys found unwanted, injured or abused.

The gibbons come from, among other things, homes, bars and zoos around Thailand. The refuge is privately run and seeks to give the gibbons a new and better life, where they receive care, sufficient space and the right food.
