City Introduction

Maribor is a city in northeastern Slovenia. It is the country’s second largest city, and it has been referred to since the 12th century as Castrum Marchburch. Maribor became a market town and gained city status in 1264. The town flourished as a trading town and became part of the Habsburg Empire. The 17th-18th centuries were marked by numerous fires and epidemics, while the city was rebuilt each time, and the industrialization of the 19th century helped to bring about new development.

The center of the city is the square Glavni trg, where there are cafes, coziness and several attractions. This is where the city’s town hall from the 16th century is located, and in front of the town hall you can see Maribor’s plague column. A column was erected in 1681 in gratitude for the end of the plague epidemic of the time, and the current column is a replacement from the 18th century. From Glavni trg you can also take a walk in the city’s narrow streets and to the square Slomškov trg, where the city’s Romanesque cathedral from the 12th century is located as one of several structures worth seeing.

Maribor lies along the banks of the Drava, and just south of Glavni trg you can cross the river on the Stari most bridge, the most famous in the city. The bridge is 270 meters long and was completed in 1913. When you are in the area, you can also take a stroll along the Drava and in the green belt that lies on the southern bank. From here there is a fine view of Maribor’s profile in the old town.

In Maribor, the city’s old castle is located in the northern part of the center. It was built by Emperor Frederik III in the years 1478-1483 as part of the city’s defenses, and today the castle is set up as Maribor’s regional museum. You can also see other preserved parts of the city’s old fortifications. Along the Drava are the Vodni Stolp, Sodi Stolp and Židovski stolp towers, which were built in the 15th and 16th centuries. Close to Vodni Stolp, you can visit Maribor’s synagogue from the 13th century, which is now a museum.
