City Introduction

Naples is a city in Southwest Florida nestled along the Gulf of Mexico. With that location, it is a city renowned for its stunning beaches, but also for upscale shopping, and an interesting history. Founded in the late 19th century, Naples has grown from a small fishing village into a vibrant city that beautifully blends historical charm with modern elegance. You can explore the history of Naples in its well-preserved buildings and landmarks, as well as enjoy the climate and atmosphere.

The Naples Historic District is a must-visit. Centered along 5th Avenue, it is cozy and great for architecture enthusiasts since the area is home to a variety of architectural styles, including Mediterranean Revival, Colonial Revival, and Mid-Century Modern. Besides shops, cafés and restaurants, you can visit the Naples Depot Museum, housed in a restored Seaboard Air Line Railway passenger station from the 1920s. Exhibits focus on the history of transportation and trade in Southwest Florida, and you can see miniature trains as well in the neighboring Naples Lionel Train Museum.

A bit to the southwest from 5th Avenue in Old Naples is the Historic Palm Cottage, the oldest house in Naples, built in 1895. This charming cottage, maintained by the Naples Historical Society, showcases the unique tabby mortar construction and offers guided tours that provide insight into the early days of the city.

For another great sight, head west from Palm Cottage towards the Gulf of Mexico. Here you will find one of the most iconic historical sites in Naples, the Naples Pier, originally built in 1888. This landmark has been a central gathering place for residents and visitors alike ever since. It offers breathtaking views of the Gulf and to stunning sunsets here. It is also a perfect spot for fishing and dolphin watching.

You can continue exploring the nature along the vast beaches of Naples or visit the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, which is a zoo and historical botanical garden, where Henry Nehrling made the first plantings in 1919. The conversion to a zoo started in 1967, and today you can see around 70 species. You can also choose to visit the Collier Museum at Government Center. The museum offers exhibits on the history of Naples and the surrounding area, from prehistoric times to the present day.
