City Introduction

Nitra is a city in western Slovakia, located on the river Nitra and at the foot of the mountain Zobor. The city was already present from the 8th century, and it is considered Slovakia’s oldest city. Over time, the city and the area have been the scene of many acts of war and destruction. Nitra also became home to a castle and a bishop’s seat that left a mark on history. Most recently, Nitra burned down in 1708, and therefore the city was rebuilt in the dominating Baroque architecture of the century.

Nitra’s modern center is located in the so-called lower town around the round square Svätoplukovo námestie, from which the narrow street Štefánikova trieda starts. On Svätoplukovo námestie, you can see Nitra’s old town hall, mestský dom, which was built in 1882 and is now a museum. Opposite the old town hall is the city’s modern theater building, which replaced the former theater from the 1880s after destruction during the Second World War.

The old part of Nitra is the upper town, located north of the modern center. Here you will find Nitra’s castle and the square Pribinovo námestie, where you can see several mansions from the 18th and 19th centuries. Nitra’s castle is the city’s biggest attraction. It got its current appearance in the 17th century, and in the interesting building complex you can, among other things, see fortifications, the bishop’s residence and the beautiful St. Emmeram Cathedral, which is a church constructed through several centuries and in various architectural styles.

When in Nitra, the horizon to the north is dominated by the mountain Zobor. The mountain is 588 meters high, and its top is approximately 450 meters above the city. There are several hiking trails on Zobor, where there are several beautiful rock formations on the way to the top. Naturally, there is a magnificent view from the mountain, where you can see all of Nitra, the course of the river and the entire surrounding landscape.
