Nizhnevartovsk is a large Russian city on the river Ob in western Siberia. The town’s history began at the end of the 19th century, when in 1888 a quay was built here for mooring steamships. The wharf was initially a logistical measure, but at the beginning of the 20th century, a building appeared at the wharf. It was not a large town, and in 1911 there were 17 people living there.
Growth was slow, and the population reached 2,300 in 1959 and 15,000 in 1970. After that, the development of Nizhnevartovsk accelerated to the almost 300,000 people who live here today. Growth was initiated by the discovery of oil in the area in 1965, and the settlement formally became the city of Nizhnevartovsk in 1972.
Today it is therefore a modern city that you can visit. Ploshad Nefchanikov is the city’s central square and is often the center of activity in the city. To the north of the square, you can see Nizhnevartovsk Art Palace, which since 1992 has been the city’s leading cultural institution. Many different exhibitions and events are organized in the palace, and in front of it on Ploshad Nefchanikov there are sculptures and a sound and light fountain.
In the square you can also see the sculpture Street Dog, which is one of Nizhnevartovsk’s landmarks. Close to the square, on Ulitsa Lenina street, you can visit the city market, and you can also go south along Prospect Pobedy, which connects Ploshad Nefchanikov with Ob.
Along the river there is a lovely promenade with a panoramic view of the great river. If you go east, you come to Christ’s Church of the Nativity, which was inaugurated in 1999 and which, with its gilded domes, stands in interesting contrast to the surrounding residential blocks.
There are also other things to see around the city, where northwest of the center you can see the Monument to the Conquerors of Samotlor, dedicated in 1978. The monument is a 12-meter-tall figure mounted on a 10-meter granite pedestal. The monument is one of the city’s best-known places, and it is a monument to the city’s growth due to the discovery of oil north of the city, which forms one of the world’s largest oil fields, and which is centered in and around Lake Samotlor.
Surgut is a large city located along the northern bank of the river Ob. The city was founded by Tsar Fyodor I in 1594 as a small fort. Two years later, a trading house, Gostinyj Dvor, was built in the city, which for the following centuries was a regional center for the Russian development of Siberia. The fort grew into a village surrounded by moats and other defenses, and several workshops were established in the town. However, Surgut was not yet a big city, and throughout the 17th century the population was stable at around 200.
Over time, various institutions were established in Surgut, including several schools in the 19th century, but the centuries brought only a small growth to the village, which at the end of the 19th century was home to just over 1,100 citizens. In 1926, Surgut, with 1,300 inhabitants, was downgraded to the status of a village, but then the town’s growth started.
