City Introduction

Ostrava is a city on the river Oder. It is the third largest city in the Czech Republic and is located at the point where the smaller Ostravice River flows into the Oder River. Ostrava was founded in 1267, and it developed easily with the city’s strategically good location on the border between Moravia and Silesia. Later, Ostrava became the center of an extensive coal mining and metal industry, which lasted until the end of the 20th century.

Today, Ostrava is a beautiful and cozy city with an old quarter that is suitable for good walks and sights within close distance to each other. The square Masarykovo náměstí is the center of the city, and on the square, you can see a plague column erected in 1702 and the city’s old town hall, now set up as the Ostrava Museum. At the museum, you can learn more about Ostrava’s history through pictures, documents, archaeological finds, and more.

North of the old town, you can see Ostrava’s current town hall, which stands along Ostravice as one of the city’s most characteristic buildings. The town hall was built 1924-1930, and in the slender tower there is a viewing terrace at a height of 73 meters, from which there is a panoramic view of Ostrava. Behind the town hall, you can take a walk along the river to the park Komenského Sady, where there is a monument commemorating Soviet soldiers.

On the eastern bank of Ostravice you can visit the Silesian Ostrava Castle, which was originally built in the 1280s and rebuilt in the 16th century. The castle is today one of the city’s major attractions. You can continue south of the city, where there is industrial history. Here are the Trojhalí Karolina halls and the large works in the district of Vítkovice. In Ruská and Vitkovická streets, you can visit museums and lookouts in and around the closed factories.

Olomouc, Czechia Czech Republic

Olomouc

Olomouc is a city on the Morava River in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. The city is first known in documents dated in year 1017, and Olomouc became a bishop’s seat in 1063. The city grew rapidly the following centuries, becoming one of Moravia’s most important cities. However, its rivalry with Brno ended when Sweden captured Olomouc during the Thirty Years’ War. Since then, the city was fortified, and it is once again one of the country’s largest cities.

The central square in the city is called Horní náměstí, and here you can see the Olomouc Town Hall with the famous astronomical clock, which was originally installed in the 15th century. The clock today is a reconstruction from 1955 with socialist motifs. In the square you can also see the Trinity Column, which is included in UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage. The column is a fine example of Moravian Baroque from the 18th century. The column is 35 meters high and erected 1716-1754.

Katowice, Poland

Katowice

Katowice is a city located in the large Polish industrial area of Silesia. It was the large amounts of coal in the Silesian mountains that initially made Katowice a larger village when, after the Silesian War, it became Prussian in 1742. From the beginning of the 19th century, Katowice and this part of Silesia were industrialized with mining, steelworks, workshops and factories, and Katowice grew rapidly due to the industry and inflow of workers for the plants.

In the 1900s, Katowice became Polish again, and Polish soldiers arrived in the city on May 3, 1921. The local parliament was seated in Katowice, which thereby became the capital of the region. Germany annexed Katowice in 1939, and the city was under German control until liberation on January 27, 1945. Eight years later, for a period of three years, Katowice was renamed Stalinogród, the name was a tribute to the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.
